Transmission lever unlock big click

Quite recently, never noticed it before, I can hear a fairly loud click when the car is in park and I push the brake pedal. The click happens exactly simultaneously with the brake light coming on. It seems to be coming from the console area, I'm guessing it's some actuator that unlocks the transmission lever to shift out of park. The concern is, at some point I will hear one last big click, and smoke will come out. Or there won't be a last click, I will just be stranded like when the ignition switch broke.

Anyone else had this issue?

Shift lock solenoid. It's always been there. I've not heard of one breaking...

Never heard it before, it's loud! Ok, as long as they aren't notorious for shooting the core right out of the coil, I will relax for now. Are they right under the console shroud? Thanks.
