Any recommended specific cell phone holder for this generation of XC70?
Weblinks to it (and/or photos of it in XC70) are appreciated.
I don't think the air ac/heat vent-attached ones are a good idea, but let me know if you disagree & why.

I really like the iOttie suction mounted holders, like this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FXSU43W

I use the kind that push onto the vents, since the vents are angled perfectly. This is simple and cheap: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01AOV4UXC and holds up to a 5.5" phone.

Kind of depends on what you want to go for aesthetically and firm attachment

1. Proclip is nice and secure if you can accept the added bulk look. There are bulky ones that stick on your dash or suction onto the windshield. All of these have some bulk, some have a gooseneck etc..
2. High quality magnetic ones have a magnetic clip on the vent and either a metal stick on for your case or a custom case with built-in metal attachment. These are much smaller than #1 but usually require sticking something on the phone or case.
3. Cheapest solution is what actually worked best for me. Just a magnetic vent clip with a metal plate you can put under the case or even under the removable back cover. I chose this because phone/phone case has no visible mods and is flat on the back. Car vent just have a small quarter size button on the vent. Phone sometimes tilts due to position or attached charging cord exerting tension.

Anyhow, depends on your aesthetic preference on the car+phone :)

Where do you mount on the top of the dash, as it appears the speaker covers a wide swath ?

I ended up making an Oogoo holder in the phone compartment of my V70.
I mounted a 17mm ball to it and then stuck this "claw" style mount on it. That worked great for one-handed clip-in and clip-out of the phone. At the time, I had a Nexus 4 and this worked very well. Both for navigation and music as it was easily reachable and easy to see.
It also kept it OUT of the vent, as I don't know if 40f or 100f temps (depending on AC or heater) is necessarily good for the phone electronics.

Since this picture was taken, I got a Nexus 6 so I needed a different mount and I ended going with a Tylt car mount.

Now I just drop the phone in the mount and it wirelessly charges, connects to my bluetooth for music and stuff and still works as well as the previous mount.

Thanks. It would be nice if that could be moved a little to the right, as it would be at a lower height on the top of the dashboard and obstruct less the front windshield, but I'm unsure if there is a sufficient footprint in front and to the left of that speaker

Yah, there's not. I like to put the phone in horizontally so it doesn't get in the way so much. Sometimes I need to have it vertical though because the screen isn't visible if I'm wearing polarized sunglasses and it is horizontal.

If it's on the right of the speaker grill it is too far away to conveniently reach.

How about heating up in the sun? I sometimes get worried about how hot phones can get.

Luckily (?) I don't have to worry about that too much in the Pacific Northwest.

My wife and I both have this - I have the XC70 and she has the C70.
Granted I have an aftermarket radio in my car that covered the cubby hole next to the radio and thats where I put mine.
But lots of placement options with this and it works very well for my S7 and her iPhone7

I use a suction cup mounted one. It was literally the cheapest one at Wal-Mart, that I picked up in desperate need last minute before a road trip. It replaced a vent mounted one that had just broke that morning. The broken one I was replacing was $20, and the cheap one cost $9.50 (pre tax). I love the one I bought in a pinch, it is the best phone mount 've ever had.

I mount it on the window below the rear view mirror. The position is convenient and doesn't obscure my view. A caveat; I am tall and may be able to see over the phone in a was a shorter person may not. But in general this arrangement works really well for me.

Would it fit on top of the dash in front of the speaker or such? As Leto A says his holder's footprint is too big and he places it higher up on the dash above the steer wheel, as in his photo.

I dont believe it will angle properly from that mounting point for you to be able to see the screen sufficiently.
It really needs to be mounted facing towards you.

One of these various spots could work - remember, my cubby/pocket is not there anymore due to the aftermarket radio installation kit so mine is right in the middle of that spot which is prefect.

For those you use the magnetic holder kinds, does that magnetic sticker on your phone now interfere with wireless charging or not?
(what type phone model)

Old Samsung 4S. Magnetic interferes with turning off the screen feature. I believe there is a magnetic sensor in the phone to detect if an external case cover is closed and shuts off the screen. I had to place the metal plate lower on the phone to avoid this interference.

Don't use wireless charging so unfamiliar with any potential interference but googling this topic shows people do encounter wireless charging problems.

They are the absolute kings of vehicle specific holders for all phones. I've used them in all my cars since 2000 & ordering now for my new XC70.

Highly recommended

My metal stick on plate is attached to a case and not the phone.
Even before the metal plate, I had to remove the case for wireless charging - S7 Edge
Not sure if this helps :)

I recently ordered this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JRGOKQ8/

I put it on the lower right hand part of flat surface that houses the instrument panel. Then arm extends up in such a way that the phone ends up sticking out just above the steering wheel. I do have it in landscape (horizontal) mode, but that's what I prefer anyway. And there is very minimal covering of anything in the actual instrument panel.

It's working out pretty well as the phone is in a good position for navigating, so that I barely have to look downward to see it, and it's not in the way of anything else.

It's the best solution that I've come up with so far.

I just put my cell phone horizontal right in the instrument panel with a piece of none skidded material under it, it's not interfered with speedo and tachometer much and it's right in front of driver.
I've made a cell phone holder: Two plastic hooks, one wall electrical switch plate, one suction cup with hook; Use clear silicon glue to glue two plastic hooks to the sides of switch plate, drill a small hole in middle of the plate, hook the suction cup to the hole and pressed the suction cup to the instrument plastic face, voila, you have navigation screen at the best place, right in front of you, next to speedometer.
It's total cost: $1.49eac./plastic hooks+$0.27/ switch plate+$0.59/suction cup hook= $3.84 more or less by difference stores.
