I'm about to dive into this for my 2004 XC70. My wife asked me to look at her car, which was making all kinds of funky noise from the front passenger door lock area when she opened the driver's door and/or used the electrical lock button on the driver's side, or opened the front passenger door. I took the door panel off and sure enough that lock actuator / latch mechanism is possessed by worn gears or a funky solenoid or something like that.

So I've bitten the bullet and ordered a replacement from FCP rather than a junkyard pull. Typical expensive part from Volvo. $175 plus shipping. Looks tight in there with the window track, etc. I don't find any definitive DIY's on line other than a description of the job as a PITA. Just wondering if anyone has a BTDT.

Would this part failing cause the passenger door to not be able to be opened from the outside? That's what happened to mine, the passenger door only opens from the inside right now. I've just been too lazy to take a look at it.

I would say a good chance of it. Probably not the whole mechanism, but if you look at that DIY, you can see how the exterior door handle latch actuating rod is clipped to the arm on the latch mechanism. That may have popped off. If the exterior door handle feels like it is not connected to anything, I'd say that is the culprit. Should be possible to clip it back into place.

Thank you for the link. Very well written. Not enthused about doing it but am tired of reaching from drivers seat to loc/unlock passenger side.

I had to replace the pass. door lock module on an '06 V70. I read the Matthews writeup, and it looks like what I had to do. Drilling out the steel rivet at the bottom of the door took much longer than it might have if I had "punched it out". I replaced the rivet with a stainless bolt and nut. Getting the module out is like birthing a baby....takes patience and determination. I assume the door construction is the same as P2 V70.
