The Great Lakes Tour and Kentucky, 2016

Been a bit lazy this year on doing a vacation pictorial for our 2016 vacation.

We did a three week trip to Ontario down to Kentucky and back home. A mere 10,721 Kilometers (6661 miles). We left September 16, 2016 and got back October 8, 2016.
We managed to see or stop at each of the Great Lakes, go through cottage country in Ontario, visit a bunch of good friends, drive through the worst rain storm that I have ever driven through, see relatives, have a perplexing car problem, taste good food and drink and see a lot of different parts of Canada and the USA not seen by us before.

Moon rise, the pictures do not do justice to the amount of light that was not there. This is why the pictures taken on the roof of the car are so shaky. The moon rise was incredible though.

Then we come to the way to tell where a town is, grain elevators. Sadly they are dieing out, being torn down as the railways cut service to the small towns.

It was an interesting drive through North Dakota. Lots of cattle, lots of corn----lots and lots of cattle and corn. A field of cattle, a field of corn. Repeat and repeat. Broken up by cities/towns with military bases and places that I figured out where missile silos. Middle of no where, large areas with concrete barriers inside, surrounded by chain link fence. Clues military HUMVEE parked at the gate at a couple of them. No pictures though, drove past them before realizing that they were there.

The weather was certainly nicer then than now. Wait for the tail end of the trip though.
As for wide open spaces there is no shortage in those areas.

Lake ship in the picture. Stopped for lunch in Duluth at a place called Culvers, looked like a local place but through the rest of the trip we saw more of them so they are a franchise set up. Very much enjoyed the food there.

Next morning and we leave from Escanaba heading for the Canadian Border for Sudbury and then to Huntsville for a few nights.

Made it into Sudbury for supper as it was getting dark. Then a run into Huntsville in the rain and the dark. Once off the Transcanada Highway we got onto the twisty two lane secondary roads to go cross country to Huntsville. The roads were fun to drive in the dark as you could only see as far as headlamps went. Next day in the sunlight you could see how twisty they were and the results if you missed your turn. For some reason the speed at which the roads were now driven was slower.

We got to go into Bracebridge to go to a medical clinic.
Remember the hotel in Grand Forks? That Super 8. It was not so super. Run down room, toilet loose to the point you wondered if you were going to tip over. Worst part though was someones wife ended up with spider bites on an arm and shoulder with red lines running outwards. Pharmacist at a local Huntsville drugstore put enough fear of into us that we headed straight for the medical clinic in Bracebridge. It was bad enough that if not treated it would have been hospital instead of just needing two types of pills for ten days of no booze on vacation. Some one was not happy.

I got kicked out to explore the town while she spent three ish hours at the medical clinic. Much to her disappointment I did not go to Santas Village.

Spider Bites! OUCH! [cussing]

I hope the pills worked quickly to fix the 'problem' and stop the discomfort, missing out on what looked like a nice stroll around the town with some interesting pictures was a shame.

While I think that railway bridge if it is still in use could maybe do with a coat of paint?

The bites were worrying. The drugs seemed to make a difference within a day, the lines stopped growing.

I think that the railroad is still in use but probably not real busy.

Once done with the clinic and drugs procured we went off to visit the lake area where her parents used to have a cottage.

The next day we are off to visit a friend and hit another Great Lake. This time we actually get feet wet.

So the next day we do a slow meandering drive from Huntsville to Wasaga Beach which is on a bay on Lake Huron. Drove a bunch of secondary roads through small lake towns taking our time. A couple of hour drive turned into a 4-5 tour, most of it spend driving around Lake Muskoka. Went around the top of it from Bracebridge to the bottom area and off to Wasaga Beach.

Welcome to Wasaga Beach. Cloudy but warm. The sand was very hard packed sand. You would be able to drive on it with no issue at all. The water was warm as well.

After the beach our friend toured us around and we stopped for supper in a town called Collingwood. Sat on the patio and I got a view of a house across the road.

This is a wonderful shot. It shows a row full if idiots. All of the cars are parked by signs saying no stopping or parking. In addition to the signs the road is painted say no parking. You can't see those though because the cars are parked on top of them.

Sadly it looks a bit like another Disneyland (With the prices to match!!!) and completely different from when we went there a long time ago!

Still at least the water is still flowing, and 'Hornblower' is still bobbing up and down and getting everyone soaked as the water runs down your neck!

Yes the areas on the upper part of Niagara Falls is very touristy. Luckily the area right at the Falls is controlled by a Parks Commission so that area is protected.

Our one night spent in Niagara Falls over and our very expensive IHOP breakfast finished. About 20$ per body plus a tourist tax added to the bill. We start to head to the next destination. Hamilton. Long way taken as Hamilton is not that far.

Drove back into the tourist trap and then down to the Falls to follow the river upstream to.

We are staying in Hamilton for several nights to visit and celebrate a birthday. So a few days of exploring.

Much larger canal than we have in the UK, but not far from where we live is a section in the canal that has 19 sets of lock gates to take the boats from one section to the next! I believe it takes quite some time to pass through them all!

Yes the Welland Canal is interesting to see. It used to be a lot easier to get up close and personal. The security is a bit tighter now than it used to be.

We did a day trip with the father in law/birthday boy (90)/reason for coming out this way. Headed out from Hamilton to Port Dover on Lake Erie. Nice drive out but we got there and the wind blowing in from the lake made it impossible to walk the beach as the beach was trying to blow away.

Next day started to head south. Left Hamilton going through Detroit to end up in Ohio to visit relatives.

It was interesting in Ontario that they painted road lines orange in construction zones. Have not seen that before.

Over the bridge into Detroit and the USA. This picture is the tail end of the worst rain storm that I have had the displeasure of driving through. 60-70MPH traffic that you had a hard time seeing the end of the car's hood never mind the car/truck in front of you. You had to really trust that the traffic was going to keep moving with no issues as you couldn't really move to the side of the highway to wait things out. Bit of a white knuckle drive.

We got to Defiance where the hotel was and pulled off of the highway and had to look around the car for what was making the very loud high pitched squealing noise. Figured out soon enough that it was us. Checked into the hotel and headed out to visit the relatives and abuse their hospitality to try and figure out what was making the noise from the engine.

That will come tomorrow.

WOW!!! Sounds like you had 'problems' with the rain storm as we had problems of picking up about 50 extra pounds of snow that turned to ice and stuck to the 'TinTent' & 'Flamenco Red' as we went through a snow storm over here!

A couple of tomorrow's later.

Potential causes began to filter through what is left of my brain. Worst case failure problems of course popped into my mind first of course. Bearing failure of the components at the rear/accessory end of the engine was at the top of the list. Alternator, power steering, AC compressor, belt pulleys.

Started with simple diagnosis. The noise was only there with the engine running of course. Revving the engine changed the noise. It was loud enough that it was not possible to really find out the exact location of the source.
The car now has enough kilometers (140,000 ish KM) on it that a road trip toolbox and my VIDA and DICE travel on long road trips. Screw driver became a stethoscope. Bearings did not seem to be an issue. Hard to reach some of the components but I was confident the noise was not bearings. No noticeable excessive slack in the belt, not that the noise sounded like a loose belt. Oil level was fine so did not think that anything would be wrong internal in the engine.
Over the course of diagnosing noticed that the noise would endure for a few seconds after the engine was turned off. This began to bug me enough that it became the focus. With the engine running it was nearly impossible to remove the oil fill cap. With it off the noise stopped. Put my hand over the cap hole and felt lots of vacuum from the crankcase. Not normal.

Something was letting excessive engine vacuum into the crankcase. Revving the engine changed the vacuum level and noise. Noise continuing after engine shut down was the vacuum bleeding down.
Reason for the noise now known. Cause not known.

A PM to a Volvo tech on another forum got me the answer in short order.

Due to travel/hotel commitments and Volvo dealerships in the Louisville/Lexington area a quick noise reduction method of drilling holes in the oil fill cap the trip was continued. I drilled the holes I think more to prevent potential damage to engine seals.
A big thanks to my Uncle for his help and the use of his garage and tools.

After getting a new oil trap and filler cap from Volvo of Lexington, cheaper than Volvo of Louisville and they had the cap in stock. Crossed the road and performed parking lot surgery. Took about half an hour start to finish and the noise was gone.

WOW! These 'On the road analysis and repair' seem to be popping up all over the place!

But I have to say 'Well done you' for the analysis and finding the root cause of the 'problem'!

I wondered when I saw the 'O' ring if it was fatigue in the rubber that had caused it as the length of the 'failed' part is quite large?

Bet you felt a lot better when it was 'cured' and you could carry on with a much quieter ride?

Referring back to that little 'Snow Storm' we went through on our trip, it was a first for us to travel through something like that while we hopefully will not get a repeat as we go back over the same road in a few days time as the weather is improving nicely!

It was not an o ring but a diaphragm on the removed piece. The round piece in the oil trap has a spring in it so the entire round part must be a vacuum regulation system. We now have an ex Volvo tech at work now and he said that the oil traps are fairly common things to go.

Back now and want to finish this before we leave for the next trip.


So onward with the journey. Headed south cross country as we had time to see sights. Not to mention no immediate interstates to get on to. Eventually I-75 was the target as we were heading to the Lexington area, not for car parts yet though. Triple D stop--Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.

After a nice lunch at a restaurant called Wallace station, we stopped there as it is a Triple D restaurant and we enjoy the show and any of the places that we have stopped at from the show.

You forget this trip was last September/October.
Right now we are getting hot weather (25-30 C) with evening thunderstorms. Next few days is supposed to be 35ish.

Then it's those evening thunderstorms that are coming over here, picking up more water as they cross the Atlantic and with the time shift, dumping that rain in the daytime while our evenings/nights are dry!

A few days later and wishing we had evening thunderstorms. They stopped a few days ago. 30-35 degrees C and only dropping to half that overnight. Sitting out on the deck right now enjoying the sun set and the gradual drop in temperature as the house is heating up from the days heat soak. These temperatures are not what this Alberta boy is used to or tolerates well.

Tanks where they cook the sweet mash. It is very warm in the room and smells like warm grains and corn, which is of course what they use, very homey type of smell.

These are the tanks were the sour mash goes and ferments for about three days (?) before it goes to be distilled. The tanks here are made from cypress wood and are supposed to be quite old. The cypress slats of the tanks are replaced as needed. If you look at the tops edges of some of the slats they are quite worn. Looks like a boiling bubbling pot but it is not bubbling from heat. Finger dipping to get a taste was invited.

The tasting of the product

They sell four levels of Bourbon. On the left clear unaged basically moonshine. Next is their regular seven year aged. The Maker's 46 and the Private Select. I liked the first and the last more than the two middle ones.

I forget which state this was, I suspect South Dakota. It was wonderful to be able to burn up a lot of miles. At 80-85 MPH the fuel consumption was up but still ok ish. 85-90 not so much.

We overnighted on Great Falls. The weather was still OK, you could get away without a jacket. The next day we headed north into Canada. It felt like as soon as we crossed the border we hit snow. There was a fine white powder drifting across the highway. By the time we got into Lethbridge we had snow falling but not sticking. By the tme we got into Calgary........

So end of the day driving. End of the trip. We enjoyed the trip but a bit to much driving for the amount of time taken. Also looking at the last bunch of pictures I begin to suspect that the camera is having focus issues.
