No idea why, car seems to drive just fine. A super quick search seems to state "ABS module."

It's not here with me, but how would I go about further diagnosing? Just curious.

Also, it is my understanding that these lights won't be an issue at inspection, since they arent CEL...

ABS would say ABS
Exactly what light(s) are showing, IIRC there is no TRACS light on an XC as it does not have TC

Sounds like an ABS issue, alright.
This is a great resource for the Volvo community:

Read Up! ;)

It definitely says both TRACS OFF and ABS... 1998 XC.

Further, pressing the TRACS button does nothing

I will check that link..

You DO have TRACS, and it's an ABS system based feature - ABS goes out, TRACS follows...
What you don't have on a '98 is STC - Stability Traction Control. That came later. ;)

I'm thinking ABS module, just based on a quick read. The Speedo works fine; I know sometimes, it can randomly drop out. Mine does not.

I do not think it will ever leave the Sport mode setting; 99 and 2000, this selector was changed to only the "Winter" button. Seriously, does the "Economy"" setting do or accomplish anything? Is it used for long highway drives? What's the deal..

Is replacing ABS module from that guy a good place to start? (The car drives fine.)

IIRC, the speedo only reads from the FL tone ring sensor,
but there are plenty of other failure points that can disable
ABS/TRACS resulting in those two lights.

You may have a bad sensor at one of the other three wheels,
and you can run a simple check on them with a DMM, but there's
a higher probability that you have bad solder joints in the module.

The SEW switch selects different shift points in the TCU.
Long highway drives shouldn't care what you use. Once
you hit highway speeds, you're pretty much in 4th.

W is NOT recommended as it starts the car in a higher gear
to reduce torque, but puts more strain on the tranny. W Bad...

If you value the added safety of ABS, Fix It. Cheap insurance!
And you won't know when you really need it until you REALLY need it.
And Matty at MidWest is the Man. :)

Matty at Midwest even sends you the funky socket and you send it back, making it a true camaraderie of sorts of we enthusiast Volvo owners?

Quick update: The CEL seems to come on regularly. Weird part: When I scan it for codes... there ARE NONE! Strange.

It is a 1998, so, it's only the OBD2 read to pass. ......

96 to 01 modules fail all the time
Send it to Matt, for about $65 or so you will get a rebuilt module that should never fail again.

I had the same problem.
I removed the PTC valve and cleaned it because it was almost clogged.
In the process I had unplugged an ABS thingy that's on the way if you reach the turbo from top....

So whenever I accelerated so that wheels spinned the ABS+TRACS lights lit up.
Lesson learned.
