I was wondering if anyone else has had an issue with being able to remove the key while the gear selector is in Drive or reverse?

This happens after the engine has been shut off. I feel like there should be a mechanism that won't allow you to remove the key until the selector is in Park.

Any thoughts?

The car is designed with a cable that goes from the shifter to the steering column lock. When working properly that cable will not allow the key to be turned all the way off (and key removed) unless the car is in park

I.E. Your car is broken. It should not do that.

I see. I will take the column apart and see if I see anything that looks suspicious. In the mean time, I really need to get in the habit of applying the e-brake before exiting the car. We don't typically do that unless I'm on a hill, but that needs to change. There's not a more jarring feeling than when the car starts to roll as you get out.

Be careful, you could do more damage if you do not know what to look for
You probably need a new lock assy. (dealer only). Common higher mileage failure

I used to have a Pontiac that did this - it never really struck me as a problem worth fixing.
