2003 XC70 Sounds Like A Diesel At Cold Start

Just like the title - only at cold start up my XC sounds LOUD like a diesel for a couple of seconds.
Runs fine after that aside from the random lack of turbo performance....
Looking at IPD's TCV for that though......

Any input is greatly appreciated..

I've read the CVVT solenoid could cause this????

is the oil light on while this happens?

No, no lights, no issues at all other than this random loudness only a cold start.
Oil/filter is fresh...

If it's ticking that goes away over 30 seconds or so, it could be a bad exhaust manifold gasket. It'll leak when cold, and then get quiet as the engine warms.

A stone cold engine and a stethoscope would be step one in localizing the noise.
