View Full Version : puzzled by this drive-train noise ...

Hello all,

My XC70 just started to make a noise like this when making turns: https://youtu.be/NKNn_-1nLEs. It happens on both left and right turns going forward or backward. I couldn't tell which side it comes from when I walk along with the car. When the car goes straight it would also make the same noise but with a much longer interval in between. I got under the car and see no leak from the boots - they look perfect. The noise doesn't really sound the same from a typical bad outer CV joint, so I'm really puzzled. Any idea what can cause such symptom? Thanks!

Please change the video to public from private.
From your words I'm suspecting the bevel gear-

YIKES! Sounds like the bevel gear is shot.....could be the ujoint on the drive shaft as well

Thanks guys. The noise heard in the video happens when the car is turning. It would stop when going straight. When going straight the same sound may come back just once after a long stretch (hundreds of feet). So whatever is broken reacts to the turn almost exclusively. Would bear gear or ujoint do that if they are broken? Thanks!

8pack,

I got the 4 corners of the car on stands and found the awd is not working. I think I'm going to do the bevel gear mod you invented:) So I guess I have to remove the prop shaft first (I already got the half shaft out on the passenger side). Those allen head screws in the front are not easy to get to, any tips on getting them off?

Take some time, do it slowly
Spray with some PB Blaster and let it soak in first

I now have a reasonable access to the allen head screws after removing a front member from where the catalyst hangs. Not sure how to put a counterhold while removing the screws. VIDA shows a special counterhold tool (9995743) that costs about $60. Anyone managed to get these screws out without buying this tool?

OK. I got the allen head screws out. I also removed the two screws from the center. Now, how do I get it out? Do I pull it out from the rear or just drop it to the floor? Thanks!

UPDADE: I made the car into FWD. From what I can see the sleeve is not stripped, but the angle gear side is worn. So, it seems to me the material for the sleeve is harder than earlier cars, causing the worn on the angle gear side. So replacing the sleeve is no longer an option.

I personally have not had to tear into this so I could not say what your pictures is of, I would assume the sleeve (??).
Regardless it is in poor condition. You can see the height difference in the splines at the upper and lower ends and the middle. Strikes me that the splines should be the same height.

What ever it is supposed to be mated to is likely in the same poor condition and nothing would be grabbing as it should.

Sleeve on the transmission is shaped like a tube with the splines on the inside. The piece shown in my pic goes into the sleeve from transfer case. What's shown in my pic is the end of a massive gear. Typically the sleeve gets chew up but it is cheap to replace.

EDIT - the sleeve is still on the transmission and I didn't get a chance to take a picture.

Here's some pics from when I replaced the sleeve on my XC.

So while trying to chase down a oil leak I may have accidentily created another. I was noticing an engine oil leak at the back of the engine so I decided to power wash the area to get a better idea of where it was coming from, turns out it was the turbo drain, about a week later I noticed rusty oil leaking from between the transmission and angle gear. Since the angle gear collar sleeve isn't sealed and is exposed I assum some water got into the sleeve, loosened up some rust and debris in the area, and worked it's way into the input seal on the angle gear. I assembled a kit and went about replacing the collar sleeve today along with the transmission seal, axle seal, angle gear input seal, and I changed the AG fluid while it was out. The job was pretty straight forward, just like anything it's a process.

Ohhh, that's nasty. Getting up to this point was quite easy, pretty much just nut and bolt with a bit of lifting once the angle gear comes free.

Clean Up Clean Up. Splines on the angle gear look good to me, haven't seen a new one in person so I don't have anything to judge by.

Next up was tackling the collar sleeve. I've been pondering this for a while and kind of had an idea of how I was going to do it. Once the AG was removed I was laying on the ground with a few tools so I decided to give it a shot with what I had around, this is what I came up with. [emoji13]

Shade tree mechanic extraordinaire! I had to really hammer it but it came out with relative ease compared to what others have described.

For the seals a good pic set and a flat head works well to remove them. Trade size 2" ABS to push in the transmission seal and 1.75" for the angle gear, and the shaft seal in the collar sleeve can be done by hand.

Ohh la la.

Drained the AG, filled it with 75W90 GL-5, and as always, install is opposite of removal. Clean up, top off the ATF, pack up the site, and after a test run no leaks and all is well.

Including lunch break, setup and take down, it took me approx. 7h. A day well spent, and boy am I glad that I got arroud to changing out that collar sleeve, looks like it was ready to let go.

One option is to get a new sleeve and weld it onto the splined shaft.

Sorry I never responded back! Missed the post. Welding the new collar on or using JB weld is definitely an option but there is no going back!....but you could get it back to AWD if the BG is still in good working order.
