Hi all,
Anyone having problems with the HU-803 internal 4CD changer?
Today I picked up my brand new XC70 MY2003 and I think the HU-803 CD player really sucks! When I make a turn or hit a litte bump in the road the CD stops playing for like 2 or 3 seconds! Is this normal? Or should I call my dealer to ask him to replace the unit?
Is there anyone who has of had the same problems?

Hope to hear from you,
Best regards, John

JayJay:

This should NOT be happening -- take car back to dealership and have them resolve the issue. It will help if the anomaly with the CD skipping is consistent. If Volvo can't fix it I'm sure they will replace the unit. Call them ahead of time to discuss issue and to understand what to expect wrt to their approach.

I have this unit (HU-801) in my wife's S80 and it plays flawlessly -- and so should yours.

Good luck and post back on what is done about it.

Thanks for the fast response Barry. I already suspected that there must be something wrong. But maybe it's a common thing that happens more often. The HU803 could be more vulnarable because it holds 4 discs at once. But if your wives HU803 plays flawless there must be something wrong with mine. I'll call my dealer first thing in the morning to make an appointment.

I'll keep you updated.
Thanks!

Are the CD discs ones bought at the shop or are they ones you've burned yourself?

Does the stuttering problem occur with just one CD or any no matter?

I've put 4 CD's in the changer. 3 of them are originals (1 of these has some scratches on it) and 1 CD is a CD-R. But all CD's have the same problem. I think there must be something wrong. At least I'm not satisfied with the CD player. The sound of the HU803 with the Pro Logic is excellent though.

John, first of all congratulations on the new car!! http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif What you're experiencing with the CD player isn't right. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

What may be happening is that the "read ahead" buffer isn't working right, so when you hit a bump and the laser mistracks, there's nothing to read from so you have to wait a second or two for the beam to recover it's position.

It could be a faulty player, or it could be an incorrect factory setting causing a buffer underrun. Whatever, you do need to take it to the dealer. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

Daniel that does not sound good. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif Surely you should not be getting a WRITE error on a CD player? On a CD burner - yes - but not on a player which is only supposed to READ.

Sounds like the potholes have scrambled the brains of your unit... http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

Thanks Wiz. Yes, I think it's the read ahead buffer. I didn't think of this myself, but now that you've mentioned it... that MUST be the problem. When I'm listening to the music while I'm hitting a bump in the road, the music stops for like 3 secs, but continues playing 3 seconds later. I've tested it by singing along with a song http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
The dealer can call me any minute now to see what they can do about it.

Glad I'm not in the car with you when you're "singing along", John! http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/happy.gif http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Let's hope it just wasn't set up correctly at the factory and you don't have to get the unit replaced...

Haha, we have a show called Idols on TV now here in Holland. And I must say, I don't sound as bad as some of the people that were auditioning.

I believe in the U.S. the show was called "American Idol".  http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

I've called my dealer about the stutter problem, and he said he'd call me back after he'd talked to the tech guys. But he haven't called be back today http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif
