Fuel pump: to cut an access hole or not?

A) Is the pump on the passenger side (2000 v70 xc "cross country")?
B) I tapped it and heard it come on for a minute but, failed again.
C) I don't want to cut in to the wrong side.

I appreciate the help. I'm sure this has been discussed a lot. I drive a 77 bmw...wifey's car. Thanks so much.

Don't have a lift and I've never changed an in tank pump (mine is ALL external).

Is there a day with pics? I've seen some vids already.
