A Volvo owner recently asked me some questions on engine oil consumption for a 06 XC90 2.5T at 150k miles.

Consumption was at 0.5L/1000mi. The owner is quite handy DIY and tried everything (rebuilt turbo seals, rehabbed the PCV system) without success. PCV drain channel was completely clogged and pan was removed to clear it. Compression was good. Catalytic converter has no significant back pressure.

Here is what ultimately fixed this oil consumption

1. Piston soak with Marvel Mystery Oil + B12 Chem tool for over a week (pull plug and add a few ounces into the cylinder and let it sit). Helps with releasing stuck oil rings.
2. Switched to high mileage oil
3. Fill oil between the 2 marks on dipstick, not to top.

Not sure which one of these fixed the consumption. Thought I post it to correlate against other's experiences.

Chemistry of course. Mine didn't have that bad consumption, about half of that, I ran it overnight through 2 cans of Seafoam, rotating crank slightly (+/- 15 degrees) from time to time.

I loose close to a liter every 3000 miles on our 1997 850. It is on conventional Pennzoil 5w30. Is there a remedy?

If your compression is good, then might try what this member did : piston soak trick along with high mileage motor oil.

That's nothing for a 20 year old car with miles

Carry an extra quart in the car. At $4/QT it will be cheaper than any "remedy".

1QT/3,000 miles oil usage is not warrantable on a BRAND NEW car. It is considered to be within the normal range. On your 18 year old car, I wouldn't sweat it.
