I have the opportunity to buy some used winter tires called "Nordfrost".  They've been used for two winter seasons, have lots of tread left with less than 8,000 kms on them for $500 Cdn including Volvo metal rims.  They were originally puchased for a S70 through a Volvo dealership.

Who manufactures these and are there any recommendations at to whether they are a decent tire?

They are Volvo's "official" winter tire made by a Swedish company called Gislaved. They are generally considered to be pretty good tires.

The November 2002 issue of Consumer Reports rates winter tires, and the NordFrost finished 4th out of 11 in performance in the following category:

Q-RATED WINTER TIRES Designed for speeds of up to 99 mph; test group includes tires rated S (112 mph) and T (118 mph).

4th - "Gislaved NordFrost II - A very good choice where snow is less severe. Studdable."

JR - welcome to the forum! http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Do you have the Gislaveds on steel wheels, and if so are they 16 in?

Just curious... http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/huh2.gif

I purchased the 16" Nordfrost II with wheels and covers for my 99 XC for increased ground clearance. Since they are series 60, did not get the added clearance but the tires are great! -Dick

Hi again, kind of slow sometimes http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/blush.gif

I run my winter tires on 15" becourse I want a "narrower"(can one say so?) tire on snow, that is 195/65-15.
Running on 16" means that I need 205 and I think thats too wide http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/hehe.gif

eddit: sorry, forgott.. 15" Volvo "Ariane" rims!

Quicker this time http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

My winter 195/65-15 should have 635mm dia/1928mm cirk
and my (original) 205/55-16 should have 632mm dia/ 1937mm cirk

Should have, hmm the car has 85k km on those tires and thera are some moore to get out of them.... http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/huh2.gif

Yeah - JR - really quick! http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/happy.gif That's a pretty good match to the stock OD... Good job!!

Also thanks for the tire calc. link... http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif And "narrower" is very definitely OK, by the way. Your English is excellent!! http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Thanks for that, it's allways the spelling that confuses me a bit, but I will take that "exellent" and show it to my kids http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
