View Full Version : Bevel Gear Oil Change?

My 2007 has over 155k on it. I have religiously changed the oil with mobil 1 every 7k miles and a drain and fill on the transmission every 21k miles.

I have never changed the bevel gear oil. My Volvo indy says to just leave it be. I had a 2001 and changed the oil on the bevel gear and did seem to have problems after that. (yes it was the correct oil and yes it was filled properly).

Opinions on changing it or just leave it be and keep driving it..?

Changing fluid at recommended intervals and oil grade only helps. What was the problem with AG after the fluid change on 2001?

Pick up a bottle of Mobil 1 75w90, if Volvo's is not avaiable.
Suck out a little from AG and then visually compare the appearance with new. It is a good place to start.

Many here agree that AG fluid change should happen every 30,000 miles on a hi mileage car. I say 20,000 miles in urban driving.

Changed my AG oil at 120k mi. and replaced with Valvoline 75w90. Old oil was brown and smelled terrible. My tranny seemed to shift a little better afterwards but I've never read a post saying new AG oil improved trans performance so maybe just my imagination.

The correct Volvo oil can be purchased on line. About $22/quart. One quart required. Easy to suck out and replace. Replace the crush washer also.

Changed Bevel Gear Oil. Lucas 75-90 Synthetic. Filled till it overflowed and pumped exactly 100ML back out.

I went to change the rear diff oil and gave up. I couldn't figure out how to get the oil out. I could not get a tube in there to pump it out so I just sealed it back

That's interesting... I found one place in VIDA where it calls for 100 ml and two places where it warns: "Caution! Then drain out 0.2l of oil." My AG was leaking for couple of years when I've change the oil and drained 150 ml.

Use a smaller tube? I have had no problem using Mityvac and one of its smaller tubes. Heating up the oil (drive around) helps.

When I changed the rear differential oil at ~ 98000 miles on our 2004 XC70, the oil was dark brown. The biggest effort was removing the level plug, skin and blood required. I snaked a very flexible (tygon) 3/16" outside diameter tube into the differential. Took multiple tries and was careful not to jam and get caught inside. With a Mityvac creating suction, the fluid removal was slow with the small tube. Removed 0.8 litre and called it good. No chunks or sludge.

Going to try the rear again tomorrow. Have thin diameter copper tube use for water hook up on my fridge to see if that will slide in. If not will go out and try and find a smaller diameter flexible tube on Saturday,

My indie said the same thing. I thought it was bizarre to service it, especially since it's so easy to access.
The bevel gear is in such a harsh environment-hot catalytic converter and engine oil pan are all right next to it.

I got some thinner tubing and was able to weave it into the rear end. Just like someone else in another thread said you have to get it in just right at around 8 o'clock. The car was up on ramps so I only got 450ml out. I refilled with 200ml 80-140w and 250ml 75-90w (GL5) to compensate for having 1/2 of the old oil still in there and to bring the overall viscosity up. Will drive it a few thousand miles and change it out again with 75-90.

Next the haldex if Volvo is open tomorrow to get
