Does anyone have comments on 1997-2000 XC electrical and/or ignition problems? Interested in any comments positve or negative.

I owned a 1999xc (just replaced it with a 2002 xc).  It constantly burned out bulbs and sockets. Headlight, tail light, brake light.  The headlight switch failed.  No ignition problems.  Brakes were also a WEAK point.  Rear pads at 8.5-10K Front pads 15K...faithfully.  (Need pads with that oil change?)  To their credit, Volvo did reformulate the rear pads so they would get about 15K.

That is the reason I traded in for the 2002 xc.  Loved the car, couldn't stand the problems.

I too just replaced my 1999xc for a 2002xc
the 1999 used to burn out bulbs all the time (the dealer replaced these under warranty -I didn't even need to check in. I would just drive up and the guy would pop in a new one&#33http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif  This seemed to be fixed after the second year of driving - There is a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) #0006 dated Sept 99, on the turn signals and condensation

I had numerous problems with the fuel filler door which was traced back to the locking system (once in the passenger's door, once in the driver's door)  There is a TSB #0011 dated June 99, on replacing the switches .
That does it for electrical problems.

Other problems included the CD player not giving back my CD's and the whole unit needing to be replaced. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

MAF sensor failure -which I thought, for the longest time, was the typical "You didn't close the filler cap tight enough" warning light. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif

My brake pads lasted for almost two years almost 20,000kms (which I didn't think was that unusual at the time, having driven a ford taurus which needed pads every two years, on principle) http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif

I had to replace the keyswitch at 15K(3 days in the shop) and had a few headlights go out that I fixed myself before they put in the new resistors and bulbs.  I've got 41K on the original brake pads, but then I do coast a lot.
