Today I learned that my 98 V70 XC has both a bad ABS module and both front and back Oxygen sensors are
bad. The car has 55,000 miles on it.

about &#36550 for the ABS module and over &#36600 for the oxy sensors.

Has any one else had these problems with these miles on their car?

I was rather suprised to learn of these problems.

Spoke with the dealer today: the ABS control unit "waaay" backordered. Wonder if this is a national problem with the first generation V70 XC's?

Not good either way, but are they talking days, weeks, or months?

I have a 98 with 39K and just took it in due to a defective atmosphere pressure sensor, warped rear brake rotors and they reflashed the ECM to solve unstable idle when coming to a stop. All fixed under warranty.

I just found this sight and wanted to chime in.  I also had to fix both of those parts at 55k.  My 98xc has been a nightmare since the day it dropped off warranty.

Just had my ABS module, AC evaporator, front right brake boot and caliper replaced under extended warranty.  The ECC head unit is also on the verge of going.  '98 v70xc with 143k km.

Better late than never.  Both my wife an I have a 98 XC.  ABS module went bad on both cars, within months of each other, and within several months of our warranties having expired.  Dealer replaced module in both cars at no cost.  This sounds like recall fodder to me.

my 98 xc has 184k miles and hasn't had the abs working (except intermittantly on really cold days for about 30 mins runtime) for the last 60k miles!  mine was well past warranty when it started acting up.  volvo want's about $600 US w/labor to repair.
living/commuting here in philadelphia and driving in the northeast US hasn't justified repairing it.  just have to pump the brakes like an old school 264 under harsh road conditions....

I just had nw brake pads installed and the day after the abs light came on (intermitly) the dealer just called said I had a bad abs module. On monday they checked and cleaned the sensor on the rt rear brake and they thought it might fix it now its an abs module   the error code is 4086080  Can any one tell me what that indicates?

thank you 1941ford

Was just infromed that my 98 XC with 61K miles also has bad oxygen sensors, front and rear.  Estimated cost to replace $600 + tax.  And that might not be the only cause of my check engine light coming on.  The dealer also has told me that there could be problems in the emissions system as well.

Who can tell me where this abs module is located and how to identify it?

thanks in advance

I have a 99 V70 XC and I recently became a member of the "ABS/TRAC" light club.  Apparently, the ABS module is the cause of these two lights coming on simultaneously (intermittently at first, progressing to all the time).  The problem is the ABS module is too close to the turbo and the heat (over time) causes it to burn up/fry.  Normally, this occurs around 50-60K miles.  After finding out the modules go for about $500 (not including labor) I decided to do a little web surfing to find alternate fixes.  Well, low and behold!  I stumbled across a guy on ebay who was selling an ABS module for a S80.  Turns out this guy used to be a Volvo tech, and fixes ABS modules as a side-business.  He replaces the crappy solenoids inside the module with higher heat-resistant solenoids.  He also gets out the microscope and re-solders weak connection points.  His name is Victor Rocha and he lives in Los Angeles.  You can reach him at [email protected], or (562) 652-3562.  He can give you the link to his website describing how to remove and mail him the unit, plus his fees.  You can drive the car without the ABS module.  Side-effects include loss of ABS (normal brakes work just fine), loss of speedometer, and loss of tachometer.  He charged me $175 (I think… it’s been a while).  I actually drove down to his place for him to remove it for me (costing me more).  The end result is graduating from the ABS/TRAC light club for a heck of a lot cheaper than what Mr. Volvo would have charged me.  P.S.  Wheel sensors are probably not the cause of the ABS/TRAC lights.  They are pretty reliable/tough.  So give Victor a call.  Hope this helps. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

i have a 99 xc,  65K.  I recently had everylight availible in the dash on at the same time.

'Had to replace the abs module and some sensor that adjusts shift points and now 4 months later I have to replace the ETS module.

I could buy an extra Hond civic with all the moneyI'm spending.

Not happy.

My dealer informed me that my ABS Module would need to be replaced for $800+ for parts and labor. I found the following guy on Ebay, and his company repaired my abs module for $160. I had no abs, tach, speedometer for a week, but the savings made up for it in a big way. Give hime a call if you want to discuss the details.
