The day I have waited for is here, it's my first chance to experience how the XC behaves on ice and snow.

I wanted two things tested first hand:

1.) How good is the viscous coupling on ice and snow?

2.) How good are the Pirelli Scorpions S/T during winter conditions?

Well after about 30 minutes of playing and testing I must say that I am very pleased because they both performed a lot better than I expected.
These conditions must be what the VC was originally designed for, icy and slippery conditions, the car behaves like a true 4WD car even though the VC is stone cold.

When I backed the XC out of the garage this morning I had my 850 with studded tires in though and it was always spinning when I accelerated during these icy conditions.
But not the XC, even without studded tires it's a completely different thing.

I look forward to more testing later on but I can already say that the Scorpions performs a lot better than what many has said in this forum, both stopping and accelerating works well. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif

You would think I could get away from the snow living in Minnesota but I have to go to Sweden and deal with the snow there too this week. Oh well, get to see how the AWD works at least. Knowing my luck, I will wreck it before I even get it home to the states. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/nervous.gif

Don't worry bigtomhammer.

there won't be any snow whre you are going to pick up the car, only if you venture about 200 miles north you will run into snow. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif

Great picture mas71! How far south does the snow dip in December or January? If I do an overseas delivery in those months should I expect snow in Stockholm or Oslo?

Also, does your XC have DTSC? Can you notice that working on the snow? Thanks.

Hi Mike,

about the snow, in Stockholm you could expect about the same amount as shown in the photo.
In Oslo I doubt the snow stays much longer than 24 hrs, I suppose Oslo and Gothenburg has about the same climate, a very distinguished coastal climate with mild winters.

Regarding DTSC, no, my car has the STC only. DTSC wasn't available on '01-'02 XC. It was available from '03.
It is very easy (and fun) to do a 4 wheel spin during these conditions! http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
I've tried a standard V70 with DTSC though and it is definately noticable.

I'm enclosing another photo from the slope, me and a friend couldn't resist going there again, the surface was frozen stiff and it was very slippery, as you can see, the first attempt wasn't successful and the car started to slide sideways, but the next time it succeded http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Cool I checked weather.com and they are saying 40's during the day and 30's at night. Although, I do think it would be fun to test the AWD. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif .

MTM:

Regarding climate in Oslo /Gothenburg in December/January;
I've lived in both cities, and the climate is very different. In Oslo it is inland climate, and it is rather could during the winter. If you are in Oslo in January, you will most likely find a lot of snow.

Alberta received its first official snow storm yesterday night and it hit just as we were returning home from a Calgary day trip. Still had the A/S Synchrones on, but traction was still reasonably good despite the horrible road conditions. The early blast of winter caught many off guard as most of the traffic travelling in the opposite direction had slowed to a stop. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

The XC's awd was phenomenal as we cautiously passed cars in the slow lane at a blazing speed of 50 km/hr. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif

Sorta off-topic here, but Volvo needs to bring back that Polar Artic color. Everytime I see Art's XC, I think "wow, that's a great color!" Bring it back, Volvo! BTW, no snow in Stuttgart yet (Boooooo..... ) http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Amen to that!

I love Polar Artic Blue also. I saw one in our service department a few days ago. It reminded me of the last one I sold. It was the only color the couple wanted for their XC70 and was probably one of the last ones built.
