View Full Version : The sound of a cow being milked

For the past several mornings I've heard this strange sound from rear of the XC70 just a few moments prior to stopping/braking the car on a slight downhill. It doesn't bother me at this time as it isn't consistent nor does it happen once the car is fully warmed up.

The sound is very much one that is heard when milking a cow into an empty *metal* pail.

I ask this question here because I can't see your faces as I describe the sound. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif Describing it to my Service Manager would I'm sure bring a smile of sorts to his face. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Anyone else heard this noise ? -- and no, there isn't any poor cow caught under my XC70 although there are about 5 big ones in a nearby field that I pass by every morning -- and they're wonderful to see and my dogs always woof at them. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Mine makes a noise everytime right after I wash it, and I think it's the rear emergency brakes making that noise. Cuz if I leave the emergency brakes off when I wash it, it doesn't make the noise. And also it doesn't make the noise when it's raining. The noise is more like a Juice blender coming to a stop.

BTW, is the sound of catching leaking roof with a metal bucket the same as milking Cow into an empty metal pail? Sorry, I've never milked any animals before.... http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

If the water leaking thru the roof were such that it squirted down in a short burst into the metal pail then I would say yes. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif The sound is of a short duration of maybe a second.

might is be the beginning of the squeeks?

I keep thinking I am hearing something as well... I can't get it to readily replicate the sound. Pitch seems to change a bit no and again.... but it only happens say 15-20% of the time.

The posts re: the flange pins seems to be load, constant, high pitch. The metal bucket sound is more like it. I haven't decided to take it in...unless I can readily re-produce it...

Haven't heard the cow in my car yet http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/music.gif normaly play the music at a level that precludes picking up any rattle or noise http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif
When I just took delivery of my car, the ABS self testing kept me wondering for awhile. It appears only after starting the car and reaching approx 15mph. A very similar sound to the real engagement of ABS. No mention of this in the manual, but my service rep said it's "normal".
Anybody else hearing this so called ABS self test?
Don't know an animaL noise to best describe this sound but most will have heard the ABS engage once or twice. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

I resisted even clicking on this topic for fear of what might be discussed. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif I've never heard anything like that in my xc, but I don't have a lot of cow milking experience to compare it to. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Pico,
I think I may have the same sound as you. Every time I newly start the car and reach approximately 12 mph, I hear an "ehhh" sound coming somewhere below the steering wheel. Definately not the rear of the car as Barry suggests. It does not happen when I am stopped at a stoplight and then move. I've been meaning to post this question, but wanted my husband to drive the car and hear it first...but he very rarely drives my car.
I'm going in for my 3rd old change next month around 11,250 miles and 1 year adjustment period, and was definately going to inquire about this.
Only squeeks I have so far, is driver seat everytime I hit a bump and the plastic ticket holder will rattle against the windshield, all I have to do is press it, and it goes away for a while.

pico I hear this too. At first I thought it was the starter gears because they contract overnight then don't line up correctly when you engage the starter and the engine is cold. It's not a big deal... http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Thanks for the response Wiz and Joydriver. I still think it's a weird sound and haven't driven any other car that makes this kinda sound, but as you said Wiz: no big deal. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Wiz,
My sound happens even when the car is warm. If I stop at a grocery store for 15 minutes, it'll make that sound when I restart the car and drive 12 mph out of the parking lot.

Mine too. That's when I realized it wasn't the starter. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Drive into a gas station and gas the car up, restart the car and drive off and you will hear it also. I don't think its a probem but by all means talk to your service manager about it. They may have a different explanation... http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Same. Selftest every time after (re-)starting the car and reaching 12mph. As long as the ABS works when we need it I'm happy. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

My 2004 does same--when dropping it off at stockholm, I asked about it and they said it was common--dust around brake and could be taken care of with adjusting it with a screw driver--as you can tell I'm not mechanical minded--anyway it was a not to worry thing

Hello,
I can harly comment on these noises since I haven't heard them (yet) in my own car.
Therefore, I take the liberty to do some (pure) speculation:
- is it possible the noise comes from the fuel-leak pump (perhaps it simply works for a short while after you drive off).
- even in my 940 there was a dashpot to collect fumes that came out of the engine while stopped. When the car was started, the content of the dashpot was sucked in/up by the air inlet system. This is not possible with a turbo system since there is an overpressure in the air inlet ducts. It is acceptable that a system to collect fumes still (or certainly) exists in a more modern car. Perhaps this system pumps out what it collected when you drive off, and perhaps this makes some noise.
A lot of ifs and perhapses, I know, just trying to unravel the mystery http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/unhappy.gif

I'm not sure if this will help, but I was recently told by my service guy that some movement develops in the front stub axles where they join the wheel assembly (I think that's what they call it). They fixed it easily by packing some sort of material between the wheel and the axle. It was a sort of "squelching" sound that has now completely disappeared.

Pico--did something foolish began reading manuel from very beginning and on 1st page titled : General Information

Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)

The ABs system in your car performs a self-diagnostic test when the vehicle first reaches the spped of approximately 12mph (20km/h). The brake pedal will pulsate several times and a sound may be audible from the ABS control module. This is normal.

Looks like you had it right--merv http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
