View Full Version : Durability of the Replacement Bevel Gear Collar?

On a 2005 XC70 my bevel gear collar failed at around 150K miles, which appears to be totally unsurprising for these cars.

With the information available on this site, I was able to diagnose, remove and replace mine with relatively little trouble. Thanks to all who contribute here. I now have a fully functional AWD system again.

My question is about the durability of the replacement part. My understanding is that the original fails because the clearances in the spline joint were too loose, allowing fatigue and eventually failure. I also have read that the replacement collar is designed "correctly" to eliminate the problem of excessive play in the splines.

Has anyone done the replacement of the original part and then had the replacement fail? Is there any wisdom in doing a preventative replacement once I put about 100K miles on the new part?

Thanks.
