Can anyone tell me the first model year that Blind Spot Detection was available on the XC70?

2006. I believe that was only overseas though and it came here to the states in 07. Hope this helps, there is a guy on swedespeed currently retrofitting blis to his 07 xc and hopefully his info can help you out.

UPDATE - I contacted Volvo North America and they said that Blind Spot Detection was first available in the US as an option on the 2008 model year.

Interesting... I wonder why the U.S was denied all the cool tech early on? Here is a pic of an 06 v70 (ignore search box) with blis. I have checked and it is possible to order these parts in the U.S even though no cars over here actually came with it. Also it first came to the U.S in the 07 model year with the new s80 and the xc90, I have no idea why Volvo NA told you 2008.

Just because you haven't seen one doesn't mean they don't exist. Like I said in the U.S at least it was available as a option on the s80 and the xc90 in 2007. It was available as an option on 06-07 xc70's in overseas markets. Like I said parts to install the cameras are available in the states. I looked into retrofitting it to my 02 using the 04-06 s60 mirrors like in the picture I provided. The only part I am finding difficulty in acquiring cheaply are the cameras but all the other trim pieces and wiring are really easy and rather inexpensive to come by.

S80 was the first...a completely new car at the time
Your electrical system IS NOT COMPATABLE (period) 2005 was all new

Currently itwontstopsnowin is retrofitting blis to his xc90 and I was planning on following his lead on the electrical side of things. It looks as if it is a totally seperate system from the cars main wiring harness so technically it should be possible.

Here is an article from 2004 announcing it's introduction for the 2005 model year (I was off by one):

Also here is a article announcing the 2005 lineup explaining the blis option with a picture with it in a R:

I'm going to defer to JRL on this one. I am sure that BLIS was not orderable on US-spec but was in Europe. The references you posted were ore-production and most likely working off a Volvo press release. I especially enjoy the second link as it shows the interior of the a 2005 XC70 with aluminum trim, three spoke steering wheel, manual transmission and you can tell by the markings in the speedo that it is in KM/H. Definitely euro and NOT US.

OP just purchase and install an aftermarket Gosher system. Much less costly.

Like I said in my first response it was all likely overseas but it is technically possible to retrofit it to a us spec vehicle. I have conferred with a dealer to make sure it's possible.

I told you once, I'm telling you again, it will NOT be compatible with an 02s electrical and CAN system, everything is different after 2005

BLIS is overrated, I swear I don't even notice it but perhaps I'm wrong. I have the concave blind spot mirrors on both our Volvo's and they are much more practical. Or you can just look over your shoulder;-)
