Paul,

There are alot of threads on this topic, so if you search, you should find answers to your questions here someplace. I know a couple people have the 17" wheels, not sure if they were quite that wide though, but I could be wrong.

You should call Tire Rack, as they will tell you what sizes you can safetly put on your car. I think they like to keep between 1 and 3% of the original size. This is especially impt., with the AWD system in these cars, as the incorrect tire size could result in serious damage to it.

Hope I've atleast pointed you in a direction!

Hello,
Perhaps it is common knowledge, this how to calculate the total height of a wheel.
The height of the tire is the width (first figure) multiplied by the ratio (second figure divided by 100) taken two times (up and down side of the wheel). Since these dimensions are in mm, divide by 25.4 for inches.
Add to that the size of the wheel, multiply by 25.4 for mm.
Example: 235/55 17"

((235*55/100)*2)/25.4 + 17 =27.177" \
or     = same result
(235*55/100)*2 +17*25.4 = 690.3mm /

With this formula you calculate how much different a wheel/tire set is from the original. You could of course change the ground clearance (and max. speed, and acceleration) of your car deliberately by choosing different wheel heights. But as Lisa mentioned you will change the behavior of the car.
Greetings,
Willy

thanks for all the information. i have checked with tirerack and they recommended using the 235/55/17 tires on 17" wheels. the formula calculated the new tire and wheel package at 27.18" versus stock 16" wheels with 215/65/15 tires at 27.00". hope the .18" will not be too bad for the car.

The slight increase in diameter should not be any problem at all and is comparable with tread wear! Also, it will partially compensate for the fact that your speedo (assuming that all of them are set up the same) will be currently reading several percent high. The important thing is that all four wheels are the same diameter. Because I could get no assurance from Volvo Canada that by doing what you are doing (even using Volvo rims) would not validate the warranty, despite the representations on my behalf by the dealer, I would be interested in how you are proceeding in this regard.

I seem to recall from the owners manual that you can't put cable chains on 17" wheels. Not that you'd need chains often, but sometimes they will be required by law

i will be keeping my 16" wheels for winter driving. reason for the 17" wheels and tires is the originals were just too noisy for normal use.

Like others who've gone before me, I'm wanting to fit 7.5" wide wheels and wider-than-stock tires, on my 2003 XC70.

Like others, my Volvo parts department is equivocal and non-committal about it.

Is anone successfully running with 7.5" x 17" wheels, and 235/55 tires? If so, please identify the specific make/model of wheel and tire.. so i can follow suit. thanks!

Welcome Shady lane http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
There are some members that have gone the 17" route. Both Art and Lydds went with volvo wheels (Sentinal and Thor) and if I'm not mistaken they opted for 225 Michelin tires. Use the search engine to find specifics or send them a PM to ask http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
ppchen also had the Thors, but with 235 dunlops.
I'm still debating the upgrade: I like the looks, but just can't justify the expenses http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

I tried out a set of Pilot sport 225/55/17 yesterday to see if the vibration I have was the tires on the car or something else. It was my tires. Long story. Got the balance RIGHT this time and the shake seems to have disapeared. Now the 17's....I ws contemplating not returning to the shop! Wow! What a difference. If I had the dough, I'd do it.

Interesting Jason,
What wheels where you using for the test drive?
What are your regular tires? Still scorpions on the Tellus wheels? I'd love to take a test drive with the 17" (and Michelin Pliot sport A/S) setup. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sly.gif But i'm afraid I'l like it too much http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif
