ok so i am looking at the local craigslist and notice that there is a 2001 xc70 with 118k for sale for $4400 with a brand new transmission that the seller says came from a dealer. i thought you could only get rebuilt transmissions? i currently own a 2001 with 180k so i know most of the problems that can arise with this year but i am really tempted. would it be a total crap shoot with the trans or have they worked out the problems with rebuilts? the funny thing is i was going to do a drain and fill on my car this weekend. it is stating to shift hard when hot but i guess i should feel lucky since it has made it to 180k with no real problems. so what do you think about the 118k car for sale?

JRL is on the money here.
Compare the two cars against the checklist (see Resources).
It may be worth a shot after you see the receipt.

See the receipt
+1 on that. See the receipt first to confirm it is a new tranny. If you take care of it, should be good to go for another 80-180k miles, as long as the engine is good. Also, make sure it has new shocks and struts.
BTW none are "new", they're all newly rebuilt from Volvo if the dealer installed it

that's what i thought. did volvo upgrade the valve body and linear solnoids on the rebuilts?
I don't think so because the newer V/Bs do not work in an 01-02 tranny
What you do (should) have is no stop neutral software which was the main tranny killer on 2001s

From the research the differences in valve bodies between the 01-02 & 03+ is:
1) The electrical interconnect (modifiable), and
2) The solenoids (rebuilds install the 03+ solenoids in the 01-02).
I have not done this, but I have chatted with a tranny shop and they agree.
it is stating to shift hard when hot
Install external oil cooler. Many people on this forum did that and noticed quite a positive effect (including me on both Volvos we have in family).

"Brand new" to them transmission. Put in how long ago?
Also factor in that if it has a new trans, which could not have been cheap to buy and install, why are they now selling?

Looking at the listing it looks like my 2001 on the outside, but the DEM and control panel don't look like p2. Could this be a foreign model? If so may have higher insurance.
Here is the add for others to chime in:

The radio & HVAC controls look completely different from mine.
I'm not sure there's anything a seller could do to get me to buy another 2001 XC, however. :)
Dash a picture is a 99 or a 2000
SLOPPY ad and probably not a great car
Also seats are HORRIBLE
