View Full Version : Odd subwoofer / spare wheel problem.

OK, I wonder if anyone else has this odd experience.

So I recently got a '02 XC, and the car has the premium sound system with the factory installed subwoofer and amplifier attached to a wooden plate under the two hatches.

The detailed instructions on how to get the spare wheel are on a sticker under the rear hatch, as you know it involves removing both the rear and frontmost lid/hatch.

The problem is that my rearmost lid/ hatch cannot simply me taken out since it has hinges and are firmly screwed in place.
It can only be opened and underneath attached to the hatch there's a small cargo net for storing stuff like gloves and etc.

Does anyone recognize this, I'vbe tried several times to remove the plate with the subwoofer following the instructions but I cannot for my life see how it can be removed or even moved to the extent that I can get the spare wheel out without doing a throrough disassembly of the rearmost hatch?

Hi Mas71, http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Does your sub setup bear any similiarity to Wesley's? (http://xc70.com/cgi-bin/ib3/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=1;t=80;hl=subwoofer)

Judging by his pics, it looks like only the forward hatch needs to be removed in order to extract the sub unit. As far as removing the spare is concerned, the rear hatch shouldn't require any more effort other than being raised up 6" or so. This will give the it plenty of clearance so that it can be easily lifted it out of it's cavity.

Yes, that's exactly the way it looks. And yes you should only have to remove the forward hatch, but after doing that you're supposed to be able to unhook the whole subwoofer plate and push it forward in order to be able to take out the wheel, I haven't been able to move the plate forward more than a few inches and then it gets jammed by the rear hatch's hinges....

I am doing something wrong obviously, I just don't know what.

Mas71,

Here's a pic of the subwoofer removal instructions as seen on Saabstory's unit. Not sure if this sheds any light on your situation though. Looks as if removal of the rear hatch is required. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

Yeah I have that sticker on my hatch too, and I agree with you, it looks like it have to be removed.

I just don't get it, did the designers really intend for it to be that way, because if you get a flat tire at -20C it won't be fun to dismount that rear hatch, I tell you. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/crazy.gif

The rear lid can be removed without taking off the hinges. Lift it slightly, then pull rearward, towards the back gate. Don't lift it too high, just a few inches up. It may require a good tug (be careful not to smash it into the rear pillars). The sub should unscrew on the left, there is a ledge on the right that it rests on, and there is a protrusion on the closest edge to the gate that will require you to lift it towards the front of car initially as you lift it out (and it is heavy&#33http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif. To replace the lid, line up the hinges and it will 'snap' back into place as you push it forward (while holding it open a few inches). The sub's nice, eh?

this is good news Nautic!

Thanks a lot for the information, I'll have to try it out immediately!

To those who got the subwoofer... I understand it is a dealer installed option.

Does that mean when I go to pick up our XC70 in Sweden, I'll have to drive it around Europe without the subwoofer and have it installed when I get back? Or can it be installed at the assembly plant so it is complete when we pick it up?

Same question for the rear spoiler...

Thanks for all the info everyone!

Once you explained it all to me it was very easy to get the subwoofer out of the way to retrieve the spare wheel.

I would like to close this issue with some photos that clarifies Nautics explanations if someone else runs into the same problems:

Is it safe to assume that one cannot use the full-size spare with the subwoofer??

If I may be so bold as to add one more question... if one uses the rear cargo mat, does it mask or decrease the effectiveness of the subwoofer? Does it cause a vibration? http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/music.gif

Tom,

This older thread (http://xc70.com/cgi-bin/ib3/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=1;t=80;hl=subwoofer) should provide you with answers to both of your questions. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Darn, I thought so.

Read the thread, the full size spare doesn't fit, and nobody seems to complain about any vibrations.

Thanks for the assist Art.

Hi, I don't know much about the way forums work, but I posted a problem on a nother thread about my sub not working. Having checked for power at the harness, what else might have gone wrong? (2002 803, ipod adapter)
Cheers

I think you won the prize for bringing back the oldest thread on the forums :D
