The car is a year old this week and I had my first occassion to lock the glove box (for valet parking). It locked just fine, but when I tried to unlock it....no joy. Finally, after a suitable amount of banging on it and cussing I was able to remove the lock core by pulling on the inserted key. Then I was able to put a screwdriver in the lock and trip the latch so I could retrieve my valuables. Today I spent 3 hours studying the disassembled lock mechanism to try and determine the failure mode. It's a cheap plastic design, made in France. Despite advanced degrees in engineering I was unable to figure out why the lock functioned perfectly when the glove box door was open, but failed in the locked state when the door was closed. Anybody else had a similar problem?

http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/hehe.gif You tried the valet key to open it?

Just kidding (I hope), but no, never had a problem with that, nor can I remember seeing a post discussing this failure http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

Hope it's not to much trouble getting it fixed again.

My wife's 99 key opens the glove box in my 02. I think any key other than the valet key will open the box

Did you use the valet key to try and unlock the glove box? If so it wont work no matter how many degrees you have! http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Guess I should have mentioned that the reason I was locking it with the NORMAL key was that I was leaving the VALET key with the VALET. Even engineers shouldn't miss that one... Anyway, it's definitely a material deficiency, either cheap plastic, poor design, or both. Glad no one else is having the problem.

I saw a post sometime back about a lockable storage container that fits in the armrest/console area. Anybody got details on this toy?

hmm.. I looked into this Anti-theft Storage box, but it seems that it's only available for the S60 and regular V70.
The XC has the silver grab handle that makes it impossible to lock that area. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

Here is a pic of the same box in the V70 console:
Looks like it would work with the grab handle..... http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/huh2.gif
But where do you put your CD's and coins? Does it come with the CD changer http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/happy.gif
