Gathering information on if you've experience a coil spring break and if so, what year?

Well, I cannot change my vote, but when I was replacing my springs this afternoon, this happened when I put my clamp on the spring...it actually just fell off the strut assembly.

(Sigh). Price of maintenance just went up $300. [nonono]

I will need to disagree with you on that. $300 is a cheap insurance. Plus i would rather have mine brake the same way, rather than on highway with the speed 55mph. Not a good feeling when you try to merge into the next lane and all in a sudden your car drops near to the ground with the big "bum" noise (front left wheel) and the sharp piece of spring cuts through the brand new tire...Think about alternatives and consider yourself lucky.

You need another choice. "No, and replaced them already" that's where I'm at.

2006 with 125,000 kms. Broke when parked. Luckily did not harm tire, just grinding on inner fender.

Front right broke while parked, and discovered next morning as I attempted to drive to work at 6am. Tire got shredded, right drive shaft damaged, and almost lost the brake line but luckily only bent the hanger away from the fender wall. Now getting both right AND left struts and springs (same age, may as well), plus a new drive shaft installed @ $1100 bucks plus change. Talk about a Monday morning regret.

Front driver's side 128K.
2004 XC70

Broken piece slipped out cleanly bouncing noisily on roadway, luckily no tire damage.

Some say the springs break because the springs are encased in plastic which accelerates rust faults.

Vehicle had 98050 miles when the right front spring broke April 18th while driving on my farm in Kentucky. I was traveling 15 MPH on a lane approaching my house and crossed a small bump on a dirt road. The spring is still aligned in the mount. Drove back 600 miles to Virginia yesterday and am ordering Lesjöfors springs online this morning from BMA.

This forum has been a wealth of information, but also has a tendency to make me a little paranoid. My 2002 with 55k needed a new mount, so I went ahead and replaced springs and struts. It nice to have piece of mind!

Left rear broke a few weeks ago on my 117k '07. Going to replace all 4 now.

As I see, the front one seems to break more often than the rear one.

...the last ring that sits on rubber insulator is known to snap - water and salt cause rust which weakens it gradually.

Based on the collective experience of forum members, I was getting paranoid about my coil springs given that the car is 9 years old and we have very salty winters. I had my front springs replaced during the 120,000 km service today and the mechanic showed me the old ones - rusting and starting to crumble. He has seen a few break so a good preventive maintenance move. Thanks for the heads up!

Add me to the club! Came out this morning to a loud noise while backing up. Got out, saw some "curved" paint flakes near the front driver's wheel. What's curved? A spring! Luckily it didn't puncture my new tire.
