Hi All

I wanted to introduce myself as a long time lurker going back to when I bought our 2000 V70Xc back in 2002. That car has made 9 10k plus winter trips across the US with 327K on it . It share duty with our 1998 V70T5 with 236k on the clock. They both also serve as DD and transport in our catering business. Both have a bit of tuning as the XC is a full stage 2.5 since we bought it with 65k in 2002. I have been working on a 2006 V70R (http://forums.swedespeed.com/showthread.php?167380-Insanity-begins-Help-needed) that is my true fun to drive car with 360 awhp at the moment. I have planned to build over the winter a 600Hp motor for it.

I took the VR on our trip the last 2 years but I don't want to kill it with so many miles. Also that car is SO hard to keep under 80 and the need for speed is just to fun with sprints to XXX happening very quickly. So I started looking for a new adventure car and special occasion car. I really like the new 2008+ XC's but the price for a T6 is still a bit rich for what I like to do. So after the guidance of JRL and some at Swedspeed I decided on a 2006 to 2007 XC70. Not only the year but white with the light interior. Our other 2 Volvo's are white and its nice that no one notices we have a new car LOL.. My local used Volvo dealer could not find me one for the past 4 months but my indy mechanic has a 2004 with 110k I was thinking about as a temp car for this years trip Over the down time I had before Thanksgiving I started the all out full USA search. I happen to find 2 very local to the bay area, a 2007 with 88K miles was the first and I was very excited to contact the owner to see it after the Friday after Thanksgiving. I was surprised when I woke up at the folks house the Craigslist ad was gone and the car sold. There was a new listing about 90 miles away that was new for another 2007 that fit the bill. I called and they still had it. I have to say these guys were the true bad feeling used car shop. I thought I had a price based on dents, and only one key. I let me employee head back home. Then we saw the final paper work and they did not adjust the price. They also only offered a 2 day 250 mile cooling off period for a fee of $250.00 ( if returned a $250 restocking fee applied) I'm over that since it is a clean car with only 66k on the clock.

The Project begins

Today was the first day of major parts coming in for the project. I was really happy with the do88 parts I used in the VR so I went with all do88 parts for XC70 project. All metal piping and R exhaust manifold will be delivered to be ceramic coated in the am the shipped to ARd for installation. The first stage should be done by Wednesday . Then on to the electronic stage.

This is a for a person who likes Volvo’s and wants a LOT more performance that I know they are capable of. I have had a similar build level ( at the time) on my 2000 XC for 270K miles so when you amort the miles per $ its not that bad . Also building a VR Link (http://forums.swedespeed.com/showthread.php?167380-Insanity-begins-Help-needed)

JRL is right once again about Carfax

When I picked up the car it looked like some Body work had been done to the right front of the car. A scuffed bumper and polishing residue were a tip off. I even called the dealer who served to car and they did know of any body damage. Well after a full stage O and inspection it turns out there was body work done on the front right as well as the left rear. Non of this was in the car fax. Tomorrow the electronics start

Dropped the car off at the Auto installer for a few electronics

Window Tint

Washer fluid heater

Laser Interceptor HD front mount

Hardwired in Passport Max

Hardwired power for Garmin GPS dash mounted on Center speaker cover

Parrot MKi 9000 Blue tooth

Mobileye collision Avoidance system

IMiv ( will use AUX input for Roady XM until I can get the factory Sirius unit installed )

2 usb ports

Panavise Phone mount

I had to hold off on the PA300 and Sirius adapter since I was not able to get the right cables in time

The Dual McNalley Boost / EGT gauge will be installed By ARD next week when we drop the car off for some power Mods

I would be posting photos if I wasn't so busy. I only have a month to get this project done and as this the 3rd Volvo project, I'm finding it harder to get people to get things shipped or finished in time. I will have to hold off on timing belt and PCV replacement until I get back. Might have it done in Erie PA when I'm back visiting the inlaws.

I hope to get photos from the Car Stereo shop Monday when I pick it up. I asked the last shop who did my VR to take photos and do a color coded schematic so the car could be serviceable in the future. The current shop will take pictures and provide me a usb drive with a cad wiring diagram.

Got the great news the scuff plates I found will be at ARD in time to be installed for trip. Shipping was almost as much as the scuff plates but with such a rare item I REALLY wanted them once I saw some photos of them installed on some XC's

Photos in the am when the sun is up

So I picked up the car today and again JRL was 100% on the suspension. I drove my VR and a friend drove the XC the hour to the installer. Picked up the car tonight and WOW a world of difference with the IPD sway bars front and rear. So I'm really looking forward to the S60AWD springs IF It will maintain load capacity other wise I'm happy with it now suspension wise. The thing I noticed was the seats. So flat compared to my 2000 XC and 98 T5 , and no comparison to the VR. So I have a few leads on VR seats to go into the XC.

Next stop tire shop for Snow tires, Stainless Steel brake lines and alignment at 8m. Then depart for ARD by noon. After dropping the car off we fly back home until the 26th when we head back to pick up the Car.

Next up

Baseline Dyno to know where I'm starting

19T Turbo with 11 blade billet wheel
EST DP
EST cat back exhaust
ARD custom tune
Rear Spoiler installation
Dual gauge installation Boost / EGT in drivers vent

One really cool thing the installers did was to install the XM antenna under the rear fiberglass panel on the roof. Will see how well this works but it's a very clean install compared to my other cars. I did not get the right factory Sirius unit so I will use my XM roady via the AUX inputs on the IMiV

Also picked up a set of R calipers, these will go with the old VR rotors I have when I when with the Girodisc 2 piece rotors on the VR. Also got a set of 18 inch peg's for summer

I may have an extra XM Commander if you want it
It's so small it lends to a nice clean mount

I agree on the Commander a very good small unit as I have one in the 2000 Xc with a lifetime subscription. I am using a Roady I have into the aux input on the IMiV. The one thing I overlooked is the AUX 3.5 mm input in the center consul. I guess previous posted listed the AUX jack in the glove box. It was a nice find yesterday.

Well I wanted to post some photos but will need to learn file limits.

What a difference in the Dyno sound of a stock XC to my VR with Dp and TME exhaust.
This stage of the project is trying to get both the builder tuner ARD and me on the same page. I wanted to give ARD the best information I could on what I wanted the car to do. I made sure the car was in a perfect Stage 0 before dropping it off( ARD will verify this before and . Also took notes on the 500 mile drive on what I liked and did not like. So today ARD's team and I talked about what I wanted and what they recommend to get it done. It was nice being on the other side for a change. I speak with Catering clients all the time in figuring out how to make there event the best it could. I feel that this project is that way after this day.

After our initial morning meeting I met the team at Portland Speed Industries shop WOW. got the car on the Dyno for a base line . I got the all clear SO FAR that the car is ready for the upgrades. So far we will be going with their 11 / 11 blade turbo for the power-band I'm looking for that is suitable to the XC. This was choice of Compressor blade configuration(11 blade ) and Exhaust configuration ( 11 blade ). The 9 or 12 blade did not fit what I was looking for in a powerband.

Flying home in the am and will be waiting like a kid at christmas :)

Thanks for letting us follow along. I've been curious as to what a finely tuned XC is capable of, so I am anxious to see where you end up.

I also want to ask you what tint levels you went with?

Thanks

I realize this is not a car that is modded much but with the VR I have It's not that the Xc is slow just no go above 70MPH. I like a lot of turbo passing power.

As to the tint I will find out. I told them to tint as dark as legal in any state that allows tinted front windows. California is a problem  Just like to have all of my wagons match. I have a catering company and at times it's all cars on deck

The window tint is 5% on the front windows and 50% on the rears

I think you have that backwards
5% is the darkest (Limo) tint out there, 50% is a light tint

I think you have that backwards

The above is the common way to discuss tinting specs, but I picked up on what you meant. [cool2]
The law here (CA) is written in a vague way, so I wanted to see what you got on the front windows. I'm thinking of going with the same percentage up front and 35% on the back so as to not have a massive contrast. I'll be curious to see actual profile shots of the windows to have a better idea.

Your fleet looks great, btw! I think all of use here are as anxious as you to see what your XC becomes! [thumbup]
Happy Holidays.

JRL
12-24-2013, 02:50 PM
The % number means the amount of light that's visible
So 5% tint (called "Limo tint") allows minimal to almost no light coming thru.
35% to 50% medium amount
and any tint over 50% is a VERY light tint.

I have 5% on the sunroof and with the shade open in the middle of a summer sunny day, barely any light comes thru and it's not hot inside either!

Very few states allow maximum tint on the front side glass, maybe a handful of Southern states.
Many allow minimum to no tint there. Many states allow almost any tint from the B pillar on back, but the rules really vary greatly, state to state.

Technically PA does not allow tint on the front door glass but since I rarely go out at night and I'm an old guy no cop has ever bothered me, (and if they do ever stop me for that I have a Drs. letter on a PA form stating that I have ultra light sensitive eyes).

30% all around and 5% on the sunroof glass

Car looks great!

On the dyno chart what happened at the dip between 47~60mph?

CKAVolvo
12-29-2013, 01:22 AM
Got if fixed after that run.

The car is a lot more fun from 50 up to 11X so far. It would have take a mile for that before, Now it' just a thought..... plant foot and your there.

On your project how is the toque steer ? It caught me by surprise that it does not go away till past 10X

ifnt420
12-29-2013, 07:29 PM
I have 245/40/19 all the way around, so torque steer is most evident when you floor it from the stop, none existence after 40mph.

Can you post the dyno chart after they fixed it?
What was the baseline run when stock before upgrade?
Finally did you get the 11 blade upgrade?

CKAVolvo
12-30-2013, 06:15 PM
Not sure on that 5,000 but my real wold experience was it had no power at that range at all. Its a totally different car now. Even got rid of the weird downhill feel it had. When going down long mountain grades it seam not to be free and felt weighted down, compared to my other cars. I know know it had to be the restrictive 13t DP and stock exhaust.

Also I really like the EST exhaust. Nice sound but no drone or cabin noise until you want to hear it

CKAVolvo
01-07-2014, 09:03 AM
No FMIC needed on this with a low Air Intake temp of -10.

Only problem so far into the trip is a frozen hood latch. Every since the temps dropped to 5F the hood will not open, any ideas? I can pull on it but it will not release. Not to bad of a problem since it goes in for some work tomorrow.

I have to say the car has been fantastic in the cold. No problems starting even at -13F. The AWD sytem works a lot better in the snow than traction on dry pavement. I will have it checked just to make sure all is fine with the AWD system.

Also nice to see air intake temps of -10 at one point. Did not get to ice free dry pavement till today along with 93 octane fuel. As usual cold weather + MORE POWER :)

So are we any further froward; I think not. The only thing I have learnd from these postings is that JRL is seeming a lot more open minded than me. Someone who can come along and spend a shed load of mony on (some) stupid things (like tinted windowsl) and be "non - judgemental about it. What is actually going through my mind is, if you were to inadvertently to tail-end someone would you fess up; would you admit to having a non-standard spec car and would you actually be insured. WOW that will leave a mark without even knowing me

Far from a cowboy .
I do carry full insurance plus a umbrella policy, but I'm not sure of the point? This project went through a full replacement of safety parts and a planed R break and caliper upgrade to go with the new capabilities of the car. The tires are also speed rated for the new capabilities

I have always liked Volvo wagons and a fun budget of at least 10K when I buy one., I also own a 2006 V70R that insured for 30K, stated Value a 2000 XC ( 326K owned for 12 years from 65K) and a 98T5( owned for 10 years and 267K).

I am one wired Volvo owner and I know that, Please do not try and duplicate these items if you can't afford to it. I have worked hard for 54 years to be at this point. Not a kid with Dad's money. I just want to point out what CAN be done not that it SHOULD be done.

A question I was asked about the car today and I think it might help others.

[/QUOTE]

I saw that you also got a EGT gauge, where is the thermocouple mounted? I have searched all over and there is so much conflicting information on locations.[/QUOTE]

Here is the bottom line on placement from talking with a lot of people, and I have 3 car with them installed.

Where I put them in the Dp is not the ideal location BUT and its a big one. These probs fail eventually. When they fail what happens? They break up.

So the best place to put an EGT sensor is to use one per exhaust port. The next best is a summation of the exhaust manifold . The only problem with a turbo car is when the sensor goes bad and the parts end up where ? You got it in the turbo.

I use the DP location , after all I'm looking for the trend. I want to know when it is not normal and how it acts with different parts. For me I go in the DP as close the turbo as possible. I will take a few shots when I slow down so you can see on the XC.

Also rush hour traffic around here where I live starts at 3:00 or so and the traffic builds up real fast, so there won't be anywhere where we can give it a (safe) punch ... more than 2-3 seconds worth and no way to see how your top end is.

I can't wait to here this!

What I meant is I can not wait to hear your review on the mods he has done. I apologize for the idiotic auto-correct on my iPhone 5. It's more like auto incorrect.

Looks like all will go well and I will depart Brooklyn about noon after traffic tomorrow :) car is fun but remember it has a months worth of luggage in it LOL. I guess we can pull the case of wine out first

O'boy...
Do not tell the governor that you are traveling to see Jim, else... just avoid "that bridge" traffic.

Ron just stopped by on his way to VA.
Both cars were filthy and we both were nothing to look at today, so sorry, no pics today!
For what he did in the short amount of time and his ECU not yet being 100% that XC is awesome! [thumbup]
It's about the same powerwise, as a good running P2 V70R now, quite quick and a whole lot of fun.
He already has a massive amount of electronics in it, stuff everywhere

He was running late and the rush hour traffic here was building up quickly so I just gave it a fairly short drive and one little  shot from 5 MPH to about 60-65. Unfortunately The high speed road around my house would already have too much traffic so I didn't even bother to go down there. I would have loved to see how it runs top end, he says it's great, pulls all the way throughout the range.
Yes, he has a bit...[sly].. of low end torque steer for a second but I attribute that to fairly worn snow tires.

Ron's a very nice guy, thanks for stopping by and have a safe trip back.

Jim

I want to say you are a great guy to meet. I really appreciate your wealth of knowledge on these cars. You gave me a lot to think about and thanks for bringing to my attention things I had not even thought of about this car. On the down side you cost me some more $$ on this car, today

Also as a good host , you know your area and we did run into traffic down south. I am glad I took the time to get that cam sensor fixed which delayed us. ( I had been getting P0348 codes after timing belt service). With the new cam sensor in the car was back to its pre service state, but also had about 3 gallons of a 50/50 blend of 93/100 octane fuel in the tank.

To answer your question from 40 mph up the pull does not stop until shift points . If you were to manual shift it you will run out at about 6200 rpm.

Great meeting you and your wife today, and look forward to your advise in the future

The trip was a blast with 9,868 miles and 27 states 35 days on the new car. Only had a slight problem with a cam sensor but other than that the car was a dream to drive compared to stock. Driving through the Blue Ridge mountains in Southern Virginia was a blast. Passing on two lane roads without even worrying about distance. Only hold back was the 117 mph limit which should be gone with the new ECU update which goes in next week.

I know I found the link on putting R rotors on the XC but just cant find it, what parts are needed besides the calipers , Rotors and new wheels ?

Later on in the summer a new paint scheme :) Monochromatic XC here we come

Just got the car back with the all season tires and there is a lot more grip and not nearly the torque steering with the snow tires. I'm sure with some good summer tires it will all be gone.
