There are four Pirelli Scorpion STR 215/65r16 on XENIA that I am planning to put on at the time of tire rotation... that is after thanksgiving.

These tires came with the XENIA, used with thread depth 4-5/32", 6/32", 6/32", and 7-8/32". I would replace ALL four with new, but for now and next 6 months - how do I reconcile it with AWD tolerance? Should I purchase a used 7-8/32", and pair it to go in the front or rear?

Are there other options, anyone selling?

Many thanks.

That's cutting it close
I would have no problem if two were at least 7/32" but if one of those is only 6/32" that's really cutting it thin on a V/C system

The two wheels, a pair, each at 6/32" not higher.
The other two are close to 5/32" and 8/32", not higher.

I would not put any of these it you say so, postpone other to-do's and pick up new set of tires.
Re-arrange priorities.

I just wouldn't put those tires on lol I severely disliked them when I had a set.

But I'm sure your needs are different than mine. I'm not an expert in the details of the stupidity in this AWD system but wouldn't pairing them 4-6 and 6-7 then keeping it light on the throttle work be fine? I mean, the system doesn't function all the time so driving without it getting coupled shouldn't be too hard.

Well...

I found 215/65R/16 Kumho and General Altimax on eBay. It is less in price than local tire outfits such as NTB, Sears, Sams, Firestone.

Anyone driving on Kumho in all urban, winter, snow and salted roads?

I know everyone has different needs, budgets, priorities etc., but since you asked.......................If you are planning to replace all 4 anyway in six months, I'd just do it now and have better tread for the winter months and not have to worry about different tread depths, etc and the associated stress on the AWD system. Why would you want to spend money on a band-aid to get you through the next 6 months when you've already decided to replace the lot? Just do it now.

Buy 4 Generals

HP 10/32 with 440 Tread wear 55,000 miles
RT 11/32 with 600 Tread wear, 70,000 miles

Is RT a better choice Jim?

I've heard better things about the HP's but the RT's have nicer specs...I'd have to do more research on them to give you any sort of advice.

Taking your alert "Cutting It Close" – I checked the tread on existing/installed wheels, it was at 4/32" on all four tires, alarmed! Would this have adverse effect on something Jim, what, where? Is there a remedy, fix.

Generals were online order only, couldn' get these sooner, Sears said Dec 18th.

After looking locally, I found 4 Pirelli P4 - 215/65R/16 98T, see spec here http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Pirelli&tireModel=P4+Four+Seasons&sidewall=Blackwall&partnum=165TR5P4V2&tab=Specs.

With treadwear 760 and tread-depth 12/32", it felt right for the money. Volvo recommends Speed Rating 98H, what to avoid running on 98T now?
