I'm having problem.  Frequently my XC70 will not start and we get message, "engine start prevent".  Wait a minute and it starts fine.  Also cruise control does not work, RANDOMLY.

Problem first occurred in July 03.  Dealership replaced throttle body ($750).  Worked fine for several months. Now problem has returned.

When placed on Dio computer, it reads "ECM-91CF Control module, internal  fault; Faulty signal;.

Service center does not know what this means! HELP  PLS.

Welcome RichB

First of all you are hiding two very inportant facts from us which, when corrected the members closest to you might have had similar problems.

The first problem is we do not know hwre on the planet you are located, as you state $ this could pertain to HK, US, CA or anywhere else that uses $'s. To correct this go to 'your  control panel' and input a state or county where you are located. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif

Secondly you do not give us any idea of what year of car you are driving, and this can also be input in the control panel.

By revealing this information other memebrs maybe able to suggest a better dealership to your location.

With regards to your problem it sounds like the key/pick up ring around the key insert is not dedecting the proper code and therefore the car's computer thinks the car is being started by a key unknown to the computer, also are you usung all your volvo keys on the same ring or is it just the single key and fob?

The immobilizer system use a chip in the key and an antenna around the key opening in the steering column. The antenna has been problematic in some cases as described in this post (http://xc70.com/cgi-bin/ib3/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=1;t=1454;hl=steering+and+ke y+and+antenna).

As for cruise control not working, this problem may be related to the brake pedal sensor (http://xc70.com/cgi-bin/ib3/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=1;t=902;hl=cruise+and+contr ol) being defective.

And welcome to the site RichB http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif

These are both common problems, and I've had both of them in the past month.  As others have mentioned, the failure to start is usually the result of some interference from something else on your keyring.  It's a simple matter to sort this out.

And as Raynald says, the cruise control can be (and in my case, was) a faulty brake pedal sensor.  You can test this yourself.  If it happens again, pull up the brake pedal with your toe.  See if the problem goes away.  Try the same thing with the gas pedal; there can be a similar problem in that sensor.
