Welcome to the forum FinlandXC70! http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif There are plenty of threads on this topic here, I would use the Search function which is quite good. Here's a thread to start you off:

glad to have you on board.
About the wheels: sure you can change with no problem about police rules?
I mean: in Italy 17'' aren't allowed on our car. I tried to change but i had to give it up.
To have the permission you must follow complicated rules.
Hope it's not so where you live!

Hmmm Nick,
Those rules must limit the aftersales market for alloy wheels I guess? Can you only use the original factory size wheels?

Well, at least the standard wheels are pretty good looking http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sly.gif

Hi, FinlandXC70

I`ve not been a member of this site all that long but you are right, this is a very impressive forum with some very helpful, interesting folk.

Where about in Finland do you live?? I was visiting friends their last summer in Helsinki who took my wife and I out to Nuuksio national park for the day. What a stunning location so near to a capital city. And Helsinki - Vantaa airport must be in one of the best airports in the world. Always a pleasure to visit Finland. It is one of the most beautiful countries in Europe and a great place to own an XC!!

Hello Finland !

I´m allso going for bigger wheels and found this site in Japan.
They are absolutely crazy about Volvos down there.
Great looking wheels. I think the 18" look the best on the XC.
And perhaps the 5-star. What do you think ?

This is the Babelfish translation-version, so after clicking at the link, click at: "It is the#chestnut VOLVO" first and then "File classified by part" and then "wheels"

Here You can use only the sizes annoted on the 'official property booklet' I don't know how to call it.
It's the document you must always have on the car that says all about property and basic elements about the car.
So if you are lucky (it depends on importer's choice) you see written more possible sizes,
if not you have only the size originally mounted.
That's the XC70 case!
On V70 they allow a lot of measures... http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

Hi there Italy, yes I have understood that you have a problem changing the wheel size, however it isn't a problem here in Finland. After all the dimension of the wheel will not change if the tyre profile is lower with bigger wheels. We could even put 18" but that would already change the character of the car with too low profile (45) tyres.. in my opinion..

18 really looks nice but... isn't the tyre profile too low for our scandinavian climate? I actually changed my T5 with big wheels because of our nordic winter which kept on slowly eating up my car from beneath.

In the winter I drive on icy roads so I use wintertyres with spikes and in the summer with much more "highway"driving I use regular summertires.

And, that was really nice wheels Finland. Who is the maker and what size are they ?

For the people in this forum, I highly recommend for you to go to this link. It's in Japanese but it has a whole bunch of pictures of different rims and sizes on actual XC70's.

VOLVO Club of Japan, wheels (http://babelfish.altavista.com/babelfish/urltrurl?lp=ja_en&url=http://www.volvoxclife.com/) I am having a hard time finding how to link the right page. I actually have saved the link on my computer but when I posted the same address it goes to another volvo site with no link to the wheels. I'm working on it.

Personally, I would like a 17" Tellus if they made one, but unfortunetly they don't. Second choice is the TECNOMAGNESIO TM SPORT wheel 17".

I would find out what the disadvantages are when going to a larger rim and tire than what is specified for the outside diameter of the stock tire.
larger diameter tires can have a negative effect on the performance on the car (slower acceleration, slower braking & less gas milage), compared to the stock tire.

FinlandXC70 one or two people here have ventured into high-performance land with the purchase of the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S at a 225-60-16 size that fits the OEM Tellus wheel and also gives a perfect 27.0" outside diameter, the spec. for this car.

Just finally getting back with the correct link.

This link has a bunch of photo's of rims that XC70 owners have put on there cars. It's interesting to see what rims have been chosen, however I don't think some of the choices are for everyone.

I am one of the two that went with the Michelin Pilot Sports.

I just picked up my car from the dealer because my alignment was off, which they fixed. They discovered that my car pulls to the right during the test drive.

They put the original wheels and tires on the car and it drove fine... they say. But my tires are causing my car to pull. The tech said that it may be the "tread pattern" on the tires. Is that possible?

Any thoughts?

Lydds I have not heard before of a tires' tread causing that kind of problem. More likely the balance is off, maybe because of uneven wear - are you driving the car real hard? http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif had the wheels rotated recently? - either one could cause imbalance, rotors OK?, no rubbing? Has a wheel been bent driving over a pothole? So many possibilities, but the tread on the tire? I doubt it... http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/huh2.gif

I felt the car pull to the side thats why I took it in. Yes my alignment was off. But they claim they fixed it. It still pulls.. so they switched the tires with the originals. They say it's the tires. I dont understand it.

I am so confused.

04-20-2003, 08:04 PM
I don't understand it either. You need to get a second/third opinion. Go to Rire Rack (http://www.tirerack.com/) and enter your zip code on the home page under "Recommended Installer". That will give you a list of tire/wheel specialists in your area. Call a couple of them and explain the advice you're getting from the dealer and see what they say. What you're being told doesn't really make sense... http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

ifnt420

It is possible for a tire to develop a radial pull to one side or the other.
If this is the case as explained by your Volvo dealer, you should take your car to an authorized Michelin dealer, because a radial pull is considered a manufacture defect just like tire out of roundness.
Your Michelin dealer should give you a pro-rated adjustment on your Pilots based on how much tread depth you have left.
If I'm not mistaken, the Pilots start out from 8/32 of an inch and is considered bold at 2/32 of an inch.
Hope this info helps !!

Cheers,

wiz
04-21-2003, 06:48 AM
Interesting. Could that be caused by incorrect pressures also? If you could switch the tires from one side to another and if it pulled the other way after the switch then that might prove there was something wrong with the tires.

Still think that Lydds ought to get a second opinion.

ifnt420
04-21-2003, 06:56 AM
Wiz, You're an expert!
That's exactly what they will do when they test for radial pull.
Lydds I hope that you can get some adjustments on those Pilots.
Good luck!

Definitely not!! I am not familiar with this problem but just figured a test for it. However, Lydds was told that the treads were causing this problem - she was not told that she had a problem called radial pull. Also is it likely that a brand that has such strict quality control as Michelin would suffer from such a defect?

Lydds, here's a site that explains what a Radial Pull (http://trucks.about.com/library/weekly/aa043002a.htm) is.
Hope it helps with those who you talk to. Any good Tire shop will know what a Radial pull is. If they don't, you definitely need to switch tire shop.
