left the car at the airport for 2 weeks as I went away for work return to find this
had to drive about 50 miles on it

what could have caused this and what needs to be replaced?

its the pass side front spring looks like it had come off the spring cup.

however I think its collapsed. could this damage the shock or any bearings or topmounts etc?

for a v70xc ph2 120k

still need to replace the rear nivomat with another 2nd had one
got two front wishbones to replace as the bushes sre gone
the gesrbox to sort

and now this

only had it 5 months!

Looks more like the spring is broken. If you feel around the back of the lowest coil you will likely find the break. Minimum you need a new spring. Replacing in pairs is recommended. Depending on age, miles and condition (leaks) you may want to do the struts as well as the springs are mounted on them so it is basically free labour to do the struts when replacing the springs. Upper strut mounts/spring seats (or what ever version of naming them you are familiar with) could/should be done as well.

another unforeseen expense on this damn car!

Where are you? And did you get any numbers off the strut or the data plate?
Below the paint code on the plate in the engine bay is the string of numbers you MUST have to get it right.
I'm about to do all my front end and may be able to send you my old one if its the sane number.
You do want to do them in pairs if possible and especially if new.

It's that time for a complete front end rebuild (sounds as if also the rear)
New struts, spring seats, springs and bearing plates plus it sounds like a pair of Nivomats

This is for an 850, but it's pretty much the same job. I'm thinking about a new strut kit by the end of the year. Good luck

BTW, Autozone can loan you the spring compressors. No need to buy the tool. Also, FCP has Sachs strut kit, without the springs, for about $600.

Better call CarriageZone or Mote-ter-carz zone ;-D in the UK to see if they loan tools!
