The center cap of the front right wheel fell off. I checked the others and noticed the other front one was loose. Not sure if it's some defect, but it almost appears that it is. Going to dealer for first 7500 mile service this thursday, so will see what they have to say.

Well let me add my comment on this. The Volvo centerpiece is nothing but ... <CENSORED>.

I had lost one after a few hundred clicks. In any case went to the garage, he (the technician) tells me that they are inserted with pressure ... no way.

They are actually made of plastic with 4 legs that insert into a groove to hold inside the center of the wheel. And for some reason, they seem to loose there rigidity and if one of the 4 is not holding on well, too bad, you will loose it !!!

Bottom line is that they are poorly manufactured, I was able to get it replaced, and I hope that they will replace two others because when I got winter tires put on, two others fell off !!!

Cheers,

Christopher

My front left hub cap fell off twice. Irritating to say the least as they cost about £15 each! I thought that I hadn't pushed them home firmly enough so I asked the dealer to fit the next replacement during a service visit. The service department told me that it shouldn't happen again, so I asked them what they did to make them so confident. They replied "superglue"!!!! http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/devil.gif

I've owned Volvo's since 1986 and this type of failure is a continuing problem. There are little manufacturing/engineering surprises throughout the car, especially in fasteners. I used to keep a supply of the flimsy plastic fasteners in the glove box of my 240DL. My 2003 XC70 seems to continue this design philosophy. I've always wondered why Volvo designs their cars this way.

In the three years of owning our XC, we've lucked out so far and haven't lost a single wheel cap. However, I've got to admit that, over time, those flimsy plastic tabs won't hold the caps in place forever.

Here's a bit of a tip. Cut several 5mm thin strips of duct tape and wrap them around the tabs where the friction fit occurs. It doesn't have to be fancy since the tape will be hidden. Pretty much guaranteed to hold them in place. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Great tip ! I am hoping they will replace the lost one for free being first visit/service. Once I get it back I will mod them up.

This sounds like it would be pretty effective. I was thinking of silicone sealant myself. By the way, have you seen that TV comedy show where this Canadian guy fixes everything with duct tape? http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
