View Full Version : Tires - alternatives to pirelli?

Has anyone tried tires other then the Pirelli Scorpions? I have an 02' XC70 with 23k on the odometer and have observed cupping on the tire's inner shoulders, both front and rear. The noise level between 30 mph and 50 mph is very annoying. Has anyone experimented with alternatives that are quieter and still have acceptable snow traction?

Nokia's have been popular on these...

Checked Nokian website and their chart recommends the WR SUV model for all season use. Anyone had any experience with that tire?

I am using Dunlop Sport AS2. It is the top rated performance touring tire by consumer reports. It is great! A major improvement in terms of noise and handling. There are some previous threads on tires you may want to consult.

Not motivated for summer and winter tires?
According to tests performed by Adac (germany), this is still the best solution, even with AWD.

I put michlin's on both my XC's (98 & 01) I forget which they were, just their normal mild all weather tire. (MXV4's I think),
Huge improvement in ride, handling and noise.

Hey Guys,

I got Michellin Syncrones my xc. Art and a few other members have as well. The Michellins are quieter, ride better and wear better than the scorpions.

PXC,

Here's a link (http://www.canadiandriver.com/articles/hl/nokian.htm) to a recent review on the WR's.

Hope that it helps. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Well, I fitted Goodyear Wrangler HP's last month amd so far so good. levels of grip seem to be the same as the Pirelli's. The main difference so far is that they are far far smoother. much less vibration and noise.

You wouldn't like the Nokians. They are similarly noisy when compared to the Pirelli tires. They are also a winter use all season tire and are subject to "uneven" wear on the edges without very close monitoring of tire pressure and 5K tire rotations.

I recommend.

Michelin Syncrones. (off road, expensive)
Michelin Pilot Sport A/S (sporty all season, high performance tire, expensive)
Yokohama AVS DB2 (very quiet, long wear, reasonable price)
Dunlop D60a2 (all season, quite when new, cheap price)
Michelin MXV4 Energy (great high performance, quiet touring tire, expensive)

A short list, but some of the better choices available IMO.

Hey,

I have been doing some research also. just not sure how good continental tires are. they have come out with a a new tire, the Premier contact that fit the XC70 specs exactly. 27" OD, with a 215 65/16 size. it is an H rated tire that is all season. here in Michigan they run about $430 installed. Continental also makes a tire the Extreme Contact that gets great reviews on Tirerack. 225/60 16 with a 26.6" OD. they also make the 4x4 contact, (215/65-16) can't find much info on this tire, but it is on the new VW SUV. does anybody have any experience with continental tires??

Conti's are decent tires. Godd value for the money.

I have been using the Nokian WR for the last 8K. I DO check the tire pressure monthly and rotate at 7K miles. Here are my observations:
1. Great winter time stick. These are ALMOST as good as a dedicated snow tire, but I can use it all season! Treadwear rating is 500. We had a heck of a winter here in the NE.
2. MUCH quieter than the original Scorpions. (I have a 2002 model)
3. NO unusual wear patterns. Very even and very little.
4. MUCH better handling in turns. More precise location.
5. MUCH better in the rain...
(Notice a trend)

Highly recommended.
