November 10th I started off on my vacation south. I forced myself to leave home with temperatures of minus 16 C and six inches of snow.

Left this:

for California via Spokane and Portland. Stopped in the Spokane area for an over nighter and then in Portland to hit up IPD for brake parts. Was going through anyways and saved on a wackload of shopping. From there headed south on the I-5 to Grants Pass to Cresent City. Cresent City south along the coast highway to Monterey. From Monterey across to Bakersfield, Las Vegas and back home.

Got lots of pictures along the way (500-600 ish). That will be cut down a little for here. A lot of them I now wonder why I took them. Must have been good at that time.

Heading south from home.

Apparently I can edit everything but the title that I misspelled. [mad2]

It should be ssicarmans California adventure.

Hi ssicarman! Would you like to swap some snow for sun? We had around 33C over here yesterday with we think the start of a Sandstorm! Love the pictures of the Mountains. [thumbup]

More to come of course. Minus 20C here for Christmas so 33C is tempting. The sandstorm I could do without.

I have to ask, as I noticed the angle of the pictures and the position of the camera.

"Young man, are you taking those nice pictures while driving that lovely car?" :):)

Afraid so. However I have reason to believe that you are mistaken on the young part.:(

This would of course explain the angle of the pictures. I took some care (I hope) while taking them.
If you want I could show you the multitude of the ones not fit for viewing. I spent the first week of the trip on my own as my wife had last minute business so we met in Las Vegas. Different doing a vacation on my own so I had no build in photographer. There are pictures coming that are actually taken on terra firma.

You are right on the lovely car part. A wack load of KM driven and not a day that I minded climbing back in to keep going.

Beginning of day 2.

Going through Spokane.

This going south from Ritzville WA to Kennewick/Pasco which for me is a black hole of road trouble. I don't think that I have ever made it through here without issues. This time it was poorly marked road construction detours.

Sorry, the trip began in Calgary, Alberta and ended back there.
The longest stop was in Las Vegas for four nights.

Overnight in Portland and a quick trip to IPD to pick up brake parts for the car. Must say that they were very nice to deal with in person. First time I have dealt with them and would do so again.

A shot of their building from down the street a bit.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a521/ssicarman/Vacation%202012/IPDinPortland.jpg

The one thing that I had not really thought about was the weather on the coastal states. I knew that they would not be getting the snow and subfreezing temperatures but failed to think further.
They are into their rainy season. So all along the I-5 and the coast I had moisture with interuptions of sun. I say moisture because it was a type of rain that I had not experienced before. On the whole it seemed to be more of a strong heavy mist that splattered or spotted on the windshield rather than raindrops. Not to say that there was not real rain at times but most of the time it was the mist rain.

South on the I-5

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a521/ssicarman/Vacation%202012/DSCF0615.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a521/ssicarman/Vacation%202012/DSCF0617.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a521/ssicarman/Vacation%202012/DSCF0618.jpg

At Grants pass in southern Oregon I left I-5 to jog over to the coast on a nice secondary road to Crescent City to overnight there. Unfortunately it was late enough that it was getting dark so pictures did not happen. It is a road worth taking if you are going for the coast in norhtern California. In the dark though it is slow as when you get into California from Oregon it begins to get very curvy as you run through the Redwood forests and with the wet roads every bit of your headlamp output is absored into the dark pavement.
As pictures further along will show the road is curvy because they build the roads around the Redwood trees. In the dark you see the yellow markers on the side of the road indicating a curve. The markers tend to be at the base of a tree that is 2-3 feet thick. Many bear scars of car hits.

So in the morning my view out my hotel room.

The pictures of the river with the barges being pushed along looked quite similar to the Rhine in Germany as they still take Coal down the river while bringing other materials back up!

It was also interesting to see that you had captured definitely one either RV/camper (Mallard) or 'Tin Tent' (Caravan) just in front of you and I think another one but quite a bit in front of you.as it looked like an RV/camper as it was white with what looked like a large rear window?

So I guess some people were also on the move South over there?

I thought the shots of the dials in your XC were interesting, especially the km/L which nearly caused me to spill my early morning coffee! [nonono]
WOW!
With gas consumption like that I would need a second mortgage on the house, or have to think about going out and getting a Tandem Bicycle instead ;)

Now you take it easy with that camera until you get your good lady on board, 'cos if you have a small 'problem' then for us to call 911 from Morocco is a bit difficult!

Looking forward to seeing the 'curvy bits' and the BIG Redwoods!

Thanks for sharing! [thumbup][thumbup]

I got a kick out of the barges. Reminded me of a trip on the Danube with my father in the 80's.

The RV I believe is a fifth wheel due to the height of the roof and the upslope of the roof. They do tend to make them big here. The bigger ones need to be pulled by one ton pick ups that seem to be dwarfed by the fifth wheel trailers that they tow.
Snow bird season for the US could start in November. In Canada it tends to start after our Thanksgiving at the beginning of October.

The mileage numbers are actually quite good. The 8.8 should be a steady state driving number. Anything lower than that would be a off throttle coasting number. The car gets what I consider to be good MPG numbers. I came into this car from a 95 Chevy 1/2 ton with a 5.0 LT that got 22-24MPG on the highway unloaded and mid high teens in the city so the worst MPG numbers on the Volvo are great to me. Right now with our temps in city driving is 10.3 ish LT/100km.
Hope you don't loose any coffee on those numbers. Good coffee is a bad thing to waste.
I am sure that you get a good bit better with your diesel and manual but Volvo has decided that we don't see them here and certainly not manual transmissions that I have seen. Maybe on an R. For a six cylinder luxury car the numbers are pretty good to me. Your diesel, does it require DEF additive? If not then this may be why Volvo doesn't bring the diesels here. May not be able to meet the US emission specs. The German luxury car dealer that I work for has diesel engines in the SUVs that need Adblue (DEF).

Not many of the curve shots, the road certainly lived up to the sign. The straight streches were few and far between. The road was hilly and curved and made my style of road photography not the best thing to try.

Apparently these little beauties will make you feel 10 feet tall like Alice.

May not be able to meet the US emission specs. The German luxury car dealer that I work for has diesel engines in the SUVs that need Adblue (DEF).

Hi!
Thank fully we don't need the DEF additive as I think there are a number of additives already in the fuel when we get it. The only one I used on a previous V70 was to occasionally put a half litre into a full tank that was supposed to keep the injectors clean, but as the engine was Volkswagen after cruising along and then put my foot down I was able to put down a 'Smoke Screen' of thick black smoke behind! The current XC does not do this thankfully as it used to upset people travelling behind!

The pictures of the sea mist and the Redwoods look great, it's only when you see the sign with the dimensions on that you can visualise the size!
We had the same thing in New Zealand when we saw the Kauri Trees which are absolutely massive, so much so that one shop had the trunk of one inside with a staircase inside the trunk going from the ground floor to the first floor, and the wood was beautiful!

I hope you were obeying the speed limits as you went around them bends while taking the pictures?
You looked a little 'wobbly' on a couple! :D:D

Nice to see it getting warmer for you.
As we are now back in the Mountains over here our nights are 'Freezing' and boy does the temperature drop fast after the sun has gone down!

The DEF doesn't actually go into the fuel. It has its own tank and supply/injection system into the exhaust. It works well, when you smell the exhaust from one of those diesels you don't get the typical diesel exhaust smell and I have yet to see a puff of black from them. Certainly a different story with the Smart car diesels. They stink.

The west coast of the US is an interesting drive. We see something new each time we go there.
I don't know if I managed to hit the speed limit on the 21 mile stretch. I don't think that I managed to look at the speedo.

By the way the nice red mushrooms were on the side of the road going to the lighthouse.

While we have never used DEF or the 'system' over here although it sounds a bit like the old '2 Stroke' Motorcycle Engine where the petrol went in the tank and the 2 Stroke Oil went in a separate tank which was then mixed with the petrol as it went through the carburettor!

On this and the previous XC70 the engine is designed to re-cycle the 'black smoke' taking it back into the engine and re-burning it, at least that is what I have been told which makes it a cleaner burn as we get nothing in the way of black smoke out of the exhausts even after cruising along and then sticking the pedal to the metal while dropping a couple of cogs!

Having said that I did get the comment from a Ministry Testing Garage that when testing both Volvo & BMW they have been advised to wear filtration masks due to the toxic fumes that are now being emitted when doing the Carbon Monoxide test!
Bit scary really!

Loved the pictures of the Lighthouse, especially the BIG one with the red roof! It looked like it was designed to be the centre piece on some ones wedding cake! [thumbup]

I did wonder also what the divers were after?

I found the light house very striking as well. The entire complex with the keepers homes was interesting to see. It is a bit over 100 years old, not old for your part of the world but over here it is getting up there. Apparently at one time it was supplied only by ship a couple (?) of times a year.

Starting the run from Mendicino area inland to the next over night in Healdsburg. Went through a mix of Redwood forest, mixed trees, scrub hillsides and wineries. Interesting drive as the mix repeated a few times before ending up with the wineries. Healdsburg is north of Santa Rosa which is on the edge of the Sonoma valley.

Time to add more pictures. Hopefully this one will take. Tried after my last post and Photobucket froze me out again. This time a different computer to see if it is me or Photobucket.

So the last shot was south of San Francisco heading south to San Jose then through Gilroy (garlic capitol according to the town and when we stayed there a few years ago we were reminded each morning as the scent of garlic was all that you smelled) to Marina. Marina is a bit north of Monterey and the hotel I stayed at was literally built on the dunes on the ocean side of the highway.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a521/ssicarman/Vacation%202012/Marina1_zpse9d47e0f.jpg

Like the Seals pictures as it reminded me of Fisherman's Wharf in SFO were they climb up on the pontoons and lay there 'moaning' all day!

Must be night time in Banff as all I could see were the town lights!

Is it still the case that 80% of the businesses in Banff are not owned by Canadians?

The seals do like talking.

For the web cam you need to account for the time difference. We are behind London by 7 hours.
Banff--I suspect that a lot of the businesses are still owned by the Japanese. This was at its worst in the 80s and 90s. There was the last time I walked the Banff Avenue stores one that was a Japanese owned store that brought over shop girls right from Japan. The store is for the Japanese tourist trade and as a non Japanese speaking person they are unable to help you because they did not speak English.

View from the hotel room, the Flamingo. Nice hotel, not the newest but they have upgraded the rooms and if you book at the right time the prices are VERY good. We did under 100$ US for the four nights we stayed. This is of course looking over the pool area which sadly was closed as the weather was just good enough for a couple of intrepid Canadians to use.

The construction is happening to the Imperial Palace which apparently (sadly?) will be changed to QUAD.

Some of the scenery over there is similar to what's over here! BUT your roads are 'W I D E R' and in much better condition than we are sometimes travelling on!

Pity the Wind Turbines screwed up the view! Maybe they should paint them to blend in with the scenery, I think there might be just a few 'Artists' still around from the 60's & 70's from the 'Flower Power People' that know how to paint!

The wind turbines added to the view I think rather than ruined. A very short video.

Right on the Bridge now but you can't tell except for the extra tall concrete guard rails, apparently the wind up the canyon can be dangerous. You don'a want to get blown off of the bridge as it could be a day or two before you hit the water.

"A little tight" you say!
If any of the cars coming towards us had stopped alongside and wound their window down we could have pretended to have been Eskimos and rubbed noses!

Yes I did like the wind turbine video, for a minute I thought it might have been your suspension if you have been listening to some Rock & Roll on the stereo that was playing in time to the turbine rotation!

Hoover Dam.... Went there on a tour in an Ex Greyhound Bus that the driver called 'The FRIDGE' and after 35 Minutes it was!
We had to beg him to put the heat back on as we were nearly suffering from Frostbite, and the guy was smiling to himself!

The shots of the new bridge look fabulous but having seen the design over here (UK) me thinks that maybe they nicked the drawings from the British Museum! :D:D

I think that you could find this basic bridge design all over the world, nice basic arch bridge design. The British Museum likely got the plans from the Romans when they were camping out over there.:D

I have had an interest in the bridge since 1997 when I visited the dam and on the way down to the dam on the original road one of the curves down went right by the base of one of the taller support pylons. The pictures really don't give you a full feel of the scale or height of the bridge. Some of the next group of pictures starts to though.

Leaving the dam (or coming to the dam) there is a parking with walking ramps or optional stairs that go from the parking area to the highway where they have built very nicely designed information areas about the bridge and from thenm you get to go out onto the bridge for some incredible views. The pictures of the signs did not come out as well as I hoped but they give an idea of what is there.

I think that this is one of the nicer hotel shopping malls on the strip. All of the newer mega casinos have them and the ones build in the 90's themed them. This one is part of Caesars Palace and is done up incredible. My favorite thing in is the curved escalator. I have a video of it but I took it on the side with the camera not realizing that I couldn't rotate it (that I have found yet).

I like your style with the pictures of the flowers,

Seeing the pictures of downtown Vegas again brought back some happy memories and our thoughts for some very good friends who live outside of Vegas.

It looked like it had been raining in Vegas or were they just hosing down the streets to keep the dust down?

Maybe it was rain and then they sent it over here where it gave us a hard time! :D

No rain while we were in Vegas. The way or what they pave the roads with makes for a very smooth surface so that may be what you are seeing.

I do seem to have a fasination with close ups of flowers but you like what you like. Macro has always been a have to have on my cameras.

The start of the long road home. Given an early enough start on the first day of travel we are able to do the drive in two days. The last two driving trips to or from Las Vegas we have over nighted in Idaho Falls to be able to eat at a nice restaurant there that overlooks the river.

This is coming up to where the interstate goes through the Virgin river canyon and you go though three states. You start in Nevada, hit a corner of Arizona and come out in Utah.

Out of the canyon and into Utah. These shots are just ones of things that looked interesting on the road north. For some reason the further north we go there is more and more of the white stuff.

Lots of these types of signs in Utah.

This place has been sitting like this for the twenty plus years that I have driven the Interstate past it. At speed going by it (the legal speed limit of course) it does not look like it has changed one bit.

Back home and the next day off to pick up the beasts from the boarding kennel. They would be one of the more important reasons to actually come back from a trip.

This is the view that the owners of the kennel have to suffer with.

All in all a good two week trip despite the excessive moisture on the coast. Drove 6443 kilometers with no issues from the car. This was the latest in the year that I have done a driving vacation so weather conditions were new to me and the places that I have been to before seemed new or different due to the weather. I also made a concerted effort to do/see different things on the coast when I was solo, slowed down to smell the Roses type of thing, so it made the trip through previously visited areas seem new.

I will likely add some more things here (videos) as there is still some space on my free Photobucket account, I wanted to get the main parts of the trip up first as I did not know how many pictures I could get on Photobucket.
I hope that anyone who took the trip through the pictures enjoyed it.
