Hmmm... again.
Could it be that Lydds missed the point in my post? http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/nervous.gif

See... I *know* the name of the magazine ( hint, hint, wink, wink, nudge, nudge,) . http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

But I'll admit I only know what "Volvo" means because one of my colleagues is a classically educated punster.

Strictly speaking - none of the above. My understanding is that the English word combination doesn't actually exist in < insert language of choice >. Its more an interpretation of the forms of that language by the founder of the company and if the language rules were strictly applied the interpretation should be acdefg rather than abcdefghij (you didn't think I'd give away the answer did you? http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif )

Just my pedantic 2c worth http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Scandinavian? I didn't know we (Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Iceland) actually have a common language... http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Sweedish? I guess you mean Swedish? http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif again http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Hi Outsider.

Actually i did mean Scandinavian! You are assuming that it is the correct answer!
I could have written anything I wanted, it would still not be the correct answer.
Had I written Swahili, it would still be incorrect,, you get my drift?
I am aware that Sweedish, Danish, Norwegian and Icelandic is not the same language, (Im Danish)!!!!
But thanks anyway.

Don't know the verb, but would it conjugate volvo, volvas, volvat, etc? http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/huh2.gif

Also means "revolve" (hence my Wallace & Gromit pun above) and I think, (believe it or not) "meditate" (but not sure about that one).

Looking at the results of this poll, not many of us did take latin classes. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif I did actually, but can't remember a thing. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif At least now I understand the name of the VCOA magazine.... http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Didn't see an option for that one above http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/devil.gif

But I suppose it looks right, to roll along - wind - twist, just how you drive a Volvo in London (that is UK not Ont.) http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

Well - I'm just a dumb ol' hillbilly from Kentucky, http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif so I guessed wrong (Life is Good), but I never took Latin in school. Since I just bought my first Volvo (and I do mean "first"), I'm definitely "Rolling" now!! http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif And life is indeed good!! http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif

I read somewhere that Volvo means "I roll" and that combined with the Volvo logo (which is the old alchemist's symbol for iron), you get "Rolling Strength".

Cheers,

Volvo, Latin for "I roll", was born on April 14th, 1927 when the first car "Jakob" left the factory in Gothenburg, Sweden. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

In the LA Times they did a review on the S40 and they happen to give an explanation of the name Volvo and also the symbol.

Here's the link: http://www.latimes.com/classified/automotive/highway1/la-hy-volvo3mar03,1,6015904.story?coll=la-home-highway1

Here's an excerpt from the article:

----------

The corporate emblem that graces the grille of the 2004.5 Volvo S40 — a circle against a diagonal stroke — is taken from the old Swedish symbol for iron. The word "Volvo" in the circle derives from the Latin word revolvo, which roughly translates as "I rotate."

I rotate?

Excuse me? Six months of frozen darkness every year, and the best the company's founding fathers could come up with was "I rotate"?

Sometime in the 1950s, Volvo sexed up its corporate logo, adding to the circle an arrow pointing at a provocative angle — the universal symbol for maleness — that was intended to denote strength and vitality.

If I read this right it means....
Many dollars..
"sorry I don't think so"
"I don't think this is covered by the warranty"
"Uh huh.."
"Cash or charge?"

"Volvo" means "I Roll."
At least that's what they tell you at the Gothenburg factory tour when you take Overseas Delivery of a new Volvo.
