Hi all.

Does anyone know if I can fit 3 bikes on a roof mounted Volvo or OEM bike carrier?

This is all dependant on how long your bars are.

If you are going OEM then i would say yes.

I used to have a V40 and was able to but three yakima bike racks on top with the volvo cross bars. See below...

I bet you could get 4 on top of a XC. I have two Rocket boxs on mine now.

Hope that helps

How easy is it to mount a bike on top of your Volvo?  I'm afraid I might drop it on the roof and ruin the car...

4 bikes on my XC, 5 on my Suburban....just a matter of bar width...and it helps if you stagger the bikes, one foward, one backward - allows bikes to be closer as handlebars don't get in way

Gundo,

I also have a suburban, 1997 though.  Does your Thule rack fit on both vehicles?

Greg.

Nope, different racks entirely - the sub rack has wider cross bars and is called the tracker model...

I haven't tried that on XC yet, but on my Volvo 940 (XC i wider&#33http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif I managed 5 (five) bikes on the roof. The secret is to put first directed to the front, second to the rear of car, third to the front...  You know now http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Bikes were of different size too; this helped to manage that certain parts of bikes were not in line with other parts of adjacent bike. To pack that was a little painful, so it was OK to pack once for a long journey, than unpack, use and pack once again after two weeks. I would not recommend that on short trips.

Thanks guys.  I only need three so it looks like I'm in business.

Now we just need a noise solution!

If you are talking about a noise solution than you may think about Volvo bicycle carrier attached to a towing bar. There is even an extended version accomodating 3 bikes! I do not have the part number now (I had to give back the catalogue to my dealer) but you should get it from your dealer. These bike carriers are very popular in Scandinavia.

If this is not an option, I am afraid that the only solution are ear plugs  http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
