Replacing a lost remote

Well, she lasted about 12 months this time, my beautiful wife has managed once again to lose her keys.  I called the Volvo dealer and it's $100 for the remote and $80 for the key.  I'm not desperate for a key since we had three but I would like to replace the remote.  I did a quick ebay search and found dozens, does anybody know if they can be programmed to work?  I assume it's more likely that the car would be programmed to accept the remote but I really don't know the Volvo system.........does anybody know what the options are?

My understanding of the remote situation is:
They can be reprogrammed but only if they come with the original packaging indicating a serial number/code that's not on the remote and if you have the same for your keys/current remote.  Additionally your dealer will probably charge you for the time.
