Ok it has arrived
after 6 months and 20.000 km. I had last week my first service.
They changed oil (volvo syntethic one)
oil filter, internal air filter, some controls
and a software upgrade. but I don't know about what. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/huh2.gif
after all 260 euro. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif
That is what I expected, but I can't be happy about it, should I? http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Forgetting: they also fixed a little occasiona vibration in the driver's door, probably only the speaker not well mounted.

http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif Am I reading this right? this is the first time you changed your engine oil afer TWENTY THOUSAND Kilometers?
Is it because it's a Turbo Diesel engine?!?!
WOW, those engine oil must be filthy!!
Was it a night and day difference in the way the car drives after the oil change?
Did you notice any thing unusual during that 20,000km?

I thought the XC requires a oil change at least once every 7500km.

Cheers

Depends on were u live and the oil you're using, and of course personal believes/preferences!

US 7500 miles (regular oil)
NL 20.000 kms (full synthetic)

ifnt420 it also seems to depend on what day it is and whether it's raining or not... http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/hehe.gif

pico is right, Volvo is all over the shop with respect to service intervals, sometimes 7500 mi/12000km, sometimes 20000km. I think Nick Roger lives in Italy, I thought my 7500mi service was expensive at around US$180, but €260 is really expensive! http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

In Italy (Wiz you are right)
there is standard 15.000 km oil change for gasoline engine and 20.000 km oil change for diesel engine.
They use only full synthetic oil.
This is standard and needed to have warranty going on.
I asked the service man if I should have changed the oil before, but he told me there was no need, and since the synthetic oil is very expensive (as you have seen) it was a waste of money too! http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sly.gif

Let's do some ballpark Math Wiz:
1) 7,500 mile/12,000 km for $180 = 0.024 cents/mile
2) 12,500 mile/20,000 km for 260 euro / $275 = 0.022 cents/mile

I'd say that's pretty much the same cost?

Plus a reduction of dealer visits! http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif

Actually mine was even more expensive - I supplied my own Mobil1 syn oil at $30 so when you add that in to the $180 it comes to 0.028 cents/mile.

But in absolute terms Nick Roger's visit was still more expensive than mine... I mean that's around 250 bucks. Two oil change & lube checks a year = $500! http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/nervous.gif

You are right, but as you've seen I drive a lot.
What more worries me is that the service man told me next time we'll give a look at brakes tablets...

How many km with your tablets?

In Spain Volvo recomends 20.000 km oil change intervals.

I'm on 119.000 km and no problems at all. I don't notice any difference before and after the oil change.

My brake tablets have been changed at arround 80.000 km.

Highway driving vs City driving and manual vs automatic will make a big variation in change intervals.

Right XCinSpain,
but do you own a manual or an automatic car?
Maybe yours is manual.
Mine is only automatic (diesel)

I was looking for the feedback of automatic trasmission cars http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

I have the automatic and mine are fine. I have about 12600 km on the car with a mix of city (40%) and highway (60%) driving. Two drivers, both reasonably gentle with the car.

There are so many factors with brake pad wear... Maybe you drive hard in Italy? http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif Having an automatic makes a huge difference in wear.

My XC is an automatic non geartronic.

80% highway griving.

Very interesting.
I have geartronic gear but I use it quite always on automatic mode.
I drive a lot of highway like you do.
And you made more than 100.000 km without ever changing the tablets?
Great! http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
I hope mine will last the same!

I've just got my car back today from its first service we have ours at 12,000 miles in the UK. Similar to the rest of Europe, unfortunately like our car prices the cost seems to be a lot higher. £254.00 which is about 350 Euros or $400. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/unhappy.gif

This is on a D5 Geartronic so I don't know if that should make any difference, I guess it shouldn't be by much.

Any other UK users out there know any different?

xcjoe:

Boo Hiss -- Geeeesh -- that's an outrageous price for a 12K service. In the USA this level of service would be around $70-$100. The service isn't much more than checking fluid levels, a safety check and oil/filter change. It sounds like they took a VERY long tea break and charged you for their tea break time http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

Sorry if I sound annoyed -- but that $400 charge is absolutely ludricous, and it's no wonder Volvo's doesn't sell too many cars in UK at those prices! ...but then this may be so across the UK auto industry with Govt. not wanting people to drive about.

Someone is ripping you UK folks off.

Barry, $70 is the cost of the oil! http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/crazy.gif and from experience it's not just the garage ripping us off that's about what you pay in an auto shop for the same grade.

Sorry Barry, but I recently paid $178 for a 7.5K job. Not proud of this feat, but it was also without the oil. Add the oil in and it came to $210. With labor at $95/hr. it soon adds up. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

You're being overcharged. For my MY2000 S80 T6 the 7,500 oil/filter services costs me $110 (parts+labor+taxes+recycle fee). I also get an oil change FREE coupon every third visit as I have three Volvos that they get to service. The recent S80 T6 30K service (a biggy) cost me $442 (parts+labor+taxes+recycle fee). This is with the S80 requiring more oil and has 6 cyl vs. 5cyl on XC70.

You're paying too much. My shop's labor rate is about $82/hr.

So what do I do? Move to Washington state? I happen to live in an area where costs are very high, the independent Volvo shop here charges $90/hour, the dealer $95/hour. It's a fact of life where I live. The labor was $143 of that $178, the other $35 went on parts, cleanup, & tax.

I'm not being overcharged, just paying the going rate around here. I'm sure there is a fairly wide range in service costs all over the U.S. And let's not mention Europe - Nick Roger, who lives in Italy, just paid a lot more than I did for a first (20K km) service.

Fair enough -- yes cost/prices do vary as you say. I best not mention your shop rates to my shop least they get some funny ideas http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Talking about price variations -- I used to live just north of Hartford, CT in early 70s and when we moved to the North West coast we noticed that tea leaves were twice as much compared to CT. Hmmmm, wonder why that was ? An example of price variation as you stated.

I'll re-phrase http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Your going rate is higher than mine http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Sounds good, Barry. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif I'm sure there is much higher demand for tea there given all the English people who move over for the nice climate. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
