View Full Version : She went BANG !

Firstly, this just had to happen a few days out from a big road trip :/

I was taking a corner in second gear on full boost, (driving hard) TRC light flashing then BANG! engine suddenly revved to redline.
Stopped car, inspect, nothing. Start car, full boost still alive but now a grinding/rubbing sound can be heard from under car.
I still have full mechanical operation, power and gear usage.

Any ideas ?

Just guessing - Axle popped out or axle splines stripped?

I would look at rear drive shaft right by the balance rubber ring.

Sounds like your angle gear is gone... :(

On a good note, you can always remove the Prop shaft and turn it into a FWD torque monster.... smokey burnouts![thumbup]

Smoky burnouts next week from Perth to Shark Bay. I like that :p

So after a day of inconclusive diagnosis we have confirmed I now have a FWD XC :)
Looks like you're right Ben

No time for torque steer - just instant skids.

How easy is it to fix the angle gear?

Not
Not sure about parts availability, just replace with a used (or new) angle gear!

Pretty much unbolt old, bolt up new as long as the coupling sleeve hasn't toasted the splines on the diff shaft. Of course in that case, you are pretty much screwed.

Good luck,

Bill

Pulling box off tomorrow and inspecting coupling sleeve. According to the dealership they have had a few do this exact thing this year already.

It's a weak point in these cars.(ALL of them).
You need to take it a bit easier after it's all back together

Well to be honest Im surprised its held up this long.
The XC just isnt built as strong as the EVO8MR lancer or my old EK Civic Type R. :(

I suppose the 19t upgrade and more boost is out of the question too

That's it, you're done?
No searching or trying to find one!
Brandon at IPD found an M58 in Canada, had it shipped to Oregon for about $500-$600 TOTAL!

Jim, shipping from Canada to Oregon is NOT the same as shipping from Europe to Australia.

lol Ben,
I have found a M66 in Australia but we're still working on compatibility issues.

I'm also seriously thinking about pulling the pin and parting it out to get something else :(

While you have put so much work into this car I honesty might do the same thing. However, with shipping costs from Australia a part out would suck for you man since it seems most of the buyers on these forums are from the US or Europe...

Post some pics of the carnage. There was an M66 for sale on craigslist near me a few weeks ago. I can scoop it up and ship it to you ;)

Quite a dilemma, I'd also part out the XC and get a V70R M66. How much is shipping from England?
Many M66 VR there. [thumbup]

Looked into this a while ago.
However, SEVS / RAWS etc do not allow you to import cars (including varients) that were sold here. So basically I can't import one

Getting parts out to Australia is painful. More so if it is a very heavy items.

Good news!
My box is now to be fixed - and much easier than expected
Upon physical inspection, it turned out the damage was not as bad as first thought.
Dealer is installing a new sleeve and away we go :)

Glad to hear it, your XC was too nice to be parted out like some junkyard beater car.
