I was told the 03 and lower had an inferior AWD systhem the 2004+ models. What exactly is the difference in these systems and does it really make a big difference? Is it enough to avoid buying a 2003 model? Thanks!

It's my understanding that pre-2003 models have a Viscous Coupling AWD system. 2003 onwards have a Haldex AWD system. I was also told that one way to tell if you have a VC or Haldex is to look simply at the badging of the vehicle. Pre-2003 models are known/badged as V70XC and with the 2003 model onwards Volvo rebadged the vehicle as the XC70. I have a 2003 XC70 and it's got the Haldex system. I don't know if VC is inferior but from what I've read on this forum it certainly requires more care and maintenance than the Haldex system. If you search Viscous coupling, youl'll find lots of threads about it. If you are looking at a 2003 model and it says "XC70" on the back (and not V70XC), I suspect it is equipped with Haldex. I guess there could be some early 2003 models that might have VC system, but I think those are few and far between, if they exist.

Thanks! Does this apply to the S60 as well?

I have an 02, and it saved my life three times during a 19 hour drive through a hellacious snowstorm.

NO NO
03 and 04 are the same, Haldex
2002 was the last year for the old system
No difference whatsoever between the two years.

The S60 AWD has always been HALDEX starting in 2002

I don't agree that the VC requires more care and maintenance...it's a simple mechanical part. You have to keep the tires rotated and tread depth within 2mm (about 3/32") to avoid wearing it out.

With the Haldex, there have been issues with the control module and pump requiring replacement...and they're several hundred $$...

Haldex is more sophisticated, and likely more capable (higher torque transferred), but it's not maintenance or defect-free...
