the car has a crank code
the sensor was replaced
and still has intermittent starts
and CEL light on with crank code;
but always starts (eventually)!
once the car gets started it
runs fine!

has about 200,000k on the engine
about 2000 on transmission rebuild
and new sensor.
ran w/o code and
issues for about 200/300miles.

anybody got a suggestion to what might be causing the starting issue?

Dirty ETM or MAF?

Since you are having a "crank code" I assume that the RPM or reference sensor was the one that was replaced? Are you sure that 1) the sensor is good and 2) the connection and/or wiring to the sensor is good. Easiest thing is check that the connection is tight and as it should be. Way too easy to dislodge things when you are tightening up all those bolts between the engine and gearbox.

Good luck,

Bill

we have taken the sensor out
and replaced it!
still have a starting issue.

dash says "REDUCED POWER"
"TIME FOR REGULAR MAINTENANCE"

car still acts fine after it starts!

Are you reading your codes with a VIDA/DiCE or a generic scanner? The former should point you right to what you need to deal with, the later may not be as specific. I know when I got the same messages you are getting on the dash, VIDA pointed me right to the crank sensor which was intermittent (60% as stated in VIDA and no CEL). If you don't have a VIDA/DiCE, having one may save you a big hassle at this point.

Good luck,

Bill

I agree with Bill - the $$ spent on a diagnostic tool are far better spent than $$ on parts that are a guess...

Cam sensors fail about as often as Crank sensors (replaced the cam sensor when my 850 had 175K on it for an intermittent start condition...)

"Time for regular maintenance" message is the 7,500 mile/12 month maintenance reminder. An easy reset...is it time for an oil change?
