Here is a copy of an email that I just sent volvo usa.

Now that Gasoline prices are on the rise. Will Volvo rethink bringing the D5 to the USA?

I would love to see the V70XC with a diesel motor for the US market. Please Please Please release this vehicle.

Sincerely,

Michael Sparks-Volvo enthusiast

I would like to say that I&#39;m going to hold off buying a XC until they put the D5 in it, but I doubt that I can since Iwill have 2 large dogs soon and we don&#39;t fit in our Jetta TDI anymore.

Please spread the word&#33;

as an alternative to introducing the D5, does anyone think they would use Ford&#39;s hybrid engine (coming out on the small-SUV Escape this year)?

Out of curiosity, msparks, what are you folks paying for a gallon of diesel and a gallon of petrol at the moment?

Here in good ol` Blighty we pay around....are you sitting down....£3.50 which is roughly &#036;6.50. To fill the tank of my S80 costs over &#036;90.

Without doubt, when I return to the XC fold it will be diesel powered. http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I saw that diesel was running about &#036;1.65 per US Gallon. Regular Gasoline is about &#036;1.72 in my area.

Not to mention my TDI gets 50+mpg when my F150 truck only gets about 13mpg. I can&#39;t wait until the weather gets a little better and can ride the Motorcycle more. It also gets about &#036;45-50mpg.

Here is the reply

</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">Dear Mr. Sparks,

Thank you for your interest in Volvo and the D5 diesel engine.

Volvo&#39;s diesel engines are popular in Europe as an economical and
efficient alternative to gasoline powered engines.

Conversely, Volvo has not identified a strong market for diesel engines
in the U.S. due to mandated emissions requirements.

We will consider importing diesel engines if a future market opens up.

It&#39;s kind of funny how VW sells every TDI they import. It&#39;s also funny how many diesel trucks and Ford excursions there are.

OH well.
I would still say it would not hurt send an email, maybe that will help them identify a market.

Was it a dream, or do I recall that US spec diesel fuel isn&#39;t as clean and would corrupt up the more precision Euro systems (?) &nbsp; So, with a heavy duty pickup, the injector nozzles have relatively large, non-foulable nozzles which can pass the guck on their way to 10mpg. &nbsp;But I don&#39;t know how that relates to how VW deals with it. &nbsp;

Remember in the 80&#39;s when Diesel was all the rage, and GM took the standard small block gas engine and converted it to a diesel? &nbsp;Wow, what a winner &nbsp; http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Yes what you say is true, VW has some minor trouble with EGR fouling the intakes,

As far as the big truck, next year they are required to have more emmissions controls, this will inturn force the Diesel fuel to get better. The new emmissions requiments are for 2006.

MY TDI works okay, but I religeously use cetane booster and cleanining additives. I also try to find the best Diesel that I can.

I think the situation is a cart before the horse, where the engines won&#39;t come from Europe until the Diesel gets better and the diesel won&#39;t get better until it&#39;s mandated&#33;

Believe it or not, my local Shell stations are now selling diesel for &#036;.07USD more per gal. than premium unleaded http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

I&#39;ve been driving a diesel for over 20 years and never seen this kind of pricing. And it&#39;s not just at one station; it&#39;s all over&#33; These high prices combined with the environmental harm diesel polution does has convinced me to sell mine (and get the XC70&#33http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif.

The heck with diesel; go ULEV&#33;&#33;

Have you considered Bi-fuel, or do you not have LPG/CNG in the US. Also the ISG engine looks interesting.

I can&#39;t recall ever seeing it sold retail, so it would probably be hard to find on the road. Looks like the Volvo will just have to do&#33; &nbsp;http://xc70.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

Gibbons is right, the diesel fuel in the US contains more sulpher than in Europe, not the engine itself but some &quot;auxilliary systems&quot; of the Volvo D5 design don&#39;t seem to be to happy with that.
Of course, if Volvo were to judge the time is right to introduce a diesel engine on the US market, I think the D5 design can be adapted (maybe the US specs of diesel fuel will be adapted, this would be the better solution perhaps).
