Somewhere here or on one of the other Volvo forums there is a thread on replacing the auto-dim mirror with a manual mirror. The auto-dim mirror itself is a not a cheap part and its replacement (according to factory instructions) involves re-programming with VIDA/DiCE. Replacing it with a manual according to the aforementioned instructions is a way cheaper and probably more effective option.

I wish I could remember where I saw the instruction that someone wrote up but I'm damn if I can find it now. Try searching on "auto dim" here and on Matthews Site (http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/).

Good Luck,

Bill

No, you can't.
The mirror is tied to the alarm, car won't start with a manual mirror

That is one thing I don't like about Volvo, The need to complicate everything. I needed a new key and they wanted about $300.00. Bill I found that link, I suppose its worth a shot $50.00 is way better then the $548 I was quoted this morning.

Had the same issue with that mirror looking blurry. I bought a used mirror off of eBay from an s60, installed it and then I found out that the sunroof and keyfob didn't work. I ended up taking both mirrors apart, cutting the two wires connected to the actual dimming glass, soldering the good glass into my cars original mirror housing, and just tossing the rest of the eBay mirror. Think I paid $50 for the mirror and haven't had a problem with it since I did it a year ago.

Thank you, I think thats what I am gonna end up having to do, wish I could just put a manual mirror in.

You can. All you have to do is transfer the electronics from inside the auto-dim mirror to the manual mirror housing. As I said, do a search on here or on Matthews Site and all will be revealed. The write-up details the whole procedure to replace the auto-dim with a manual relatively hassle-free. I'd find it for you but I'm pretty busy today. If I get a chance tomorrow I see if I can find it for you.

Ah, a quick brain flash and I remembered that the procedure is on an S80 but its the same difference as far as the auto-dim is concerned . Any road, here you go (http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=16275) and (http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=45825). These procedure just replaces the glass but page 3 of the first reference mentions applying the procedure to a manual swap . This thread (http://www.v70xc.com/forums/showthread.php?p=145282) talks about going to a manual mirror ad swapping the electrics from the auto-dim to manual but without full details. Anyway, this will get you in the right direction.

Cheers,

Bill
