Forum,

I recently purchased a 2007 xc70. Today I performed its second oil change since I have owned it at 66387 miles.

To my dismay, I fit the drained oil into a 1 gallon jug.

My oil is Castrol European formula 0w30 (LL-1 spec). I use 6 quarts and my interval change is 7K miles.

I must admit that I have not been checking my oil level as I should, having been lulled into complacentcy by my 2 old 240s which dont use a drop of oil even after 23 years.

How concerned should I be that I appear to have been 2 quarts low?

(Of course, I will be checking my oil at regular intervals now that I suspect a problem.)

Please advise. Thanks

Don't let it happen again [sly]
and you're 1+ low, filter houses almost a qt.

I dont think my XC70 has a low oil level warning as it is not an R model. The users manual says "R-models are also equipped
with an oil level warning system." Of course it has a low oil pressure warning light.

Your owner's manual recommends that you check every fill up...and so would I...

Oil use in my Volvos is about 1 Qt/ 5 - 7,000 miles...so they will get more than a quart low between changes but I top them off when the level gets to 1/2 way between add and full.

Most manufacturers won't consider oil consumption excessive until you're at 1QT/600 miles. It's been my experience that turbos use a bit more oil than normally aspirated engines, but if you're 1.5 QTs low at the 7,000 mile mark, you're nowhere near excessive consumption...

And your choice of Castrol 0W30 is excellent, just start checking it more often...

you're right, my 2005 XC70 2.5T have it, but the MY2007 not (in european specifications). In my car the first message in the text window (Low oil level / oil filling) comes as it approaches the minimum, I saw it once

Any signs of oil externally? If so your pcv system is suspect
