Hi All,
Looking at an 01 XC and it has new tires on it but of two different MFG's. Isa this the year that if the tires are not all of the same MFG it will tear up the angle gear?
Thanks,
Chris

Yes - if the tires are not within 3/32" (actually, I think it's 3mm) of the same diameter, you'll get excessive difference in rotation that tears up the angle gear...
What would worry me is not the tires on it now, (they're likely close enough) but rather, how many miles did it run with a mix of worn tires and new to end up with 2 different brands?

The owner could only afford to put 2 new tires on. What year does this not matter on these cars? Perhaps I should stay away from this one if there is an unknown.
It IS 3/32" (not 3mm) and 2003 and newer cars it's not as critical
These are Haldex (electronic AWD) equipped cars

2003 and up had a different system, on which it didn't matter...
I would worry about this one...only had the $$ to do a pair of tires? Really? then, they likely didn't rotate them often enough to keep them even...and oil changes were likely deferred...as was the timing belt...
It might be OK, but for a car that old (yeah, I know, I drive quite a few of them), I would pass unless it had great maintenance history...
I agree 100%, PASS on this one.
If you want a real good one (which obviously will be more money), see my 04 in the classifieds here.
Otherwise buy an 03 and newer if you can.
Generally they're much better cars all over than 01-02s
