Hey Guys-- I've got an '11 XC70, and thinking about getting an XC90 for my wife (between that and a 4runner)-- anything I should be considering? My understanding is that the XC90 stereo is a generation behind-- what does that mean for Bluetooth and iPod integration? Looking to spend under $30k, which would work for an '09 or earlier, but can stretch a little if needed-- are any years better than others? Anything I should be looking for? Power is not a concern-- I'm confident that the 3.2 will have enough oomph for her, I just want my wifey safe!

Later is always better
07s to current and newer, not many bugs and are pretty good vehicles
Not sure about the audio but I'm pretty sure the 07s and newer are capable of handling everything

2008 would be the most reliable, according to J.D.Power and/or Consumer Report.Org. or at least that what they say. I have an 2008 3.2 AWD, 25.000 Kms.(not a whole lot), no problem what so ever.
As for the audio system it is generations ahead and not behind. The premium sound system with the Dynaudio speakers, 2007-2010 is one of the best audio systems found in any car, any make or any year according to audiophile society. You will enjoy a sound stage found only in amphitheaters, rated even better than Bowers & Wilkins speakers found in very expensive cars. Belive it or not this system is one of the main reason why I bought my XC90. I Don't use bluetooth nor i-pod just regular CDs.
If you are really into High-End audio, Do not hesitate to opt for the Dynaudio speakers, (dropped in 2011-2012 Ford is cutting cost). Just check the label "Dynaudio Authentic Fidelity" on the dash centre speaker to figure it out.
Good luck

Huh?
FORD had nothing to do with 2011s and 2012s.
The Chinese have owned Volvo for over a year now and for the last couple of years Ford had NOTHING to do with any Volvo product

Thanks for the info,
I am aware of the new chinese ownership, but changes take about 3-4 years to filter through to the cars!

'07+ should be fine reliability wise. Hard part will be finding a used XC90 with an interior that hasn't been neglected. They are primarily used as kid haulers and seem to be treated like glorified minivans. I was a little shocked at the level of post-detailing carpet stains, weird smells, ingrained dog hair, worn leather and scuffs when looking at '08+ Volvo CPO vehicles with $30k+ price tags. I found a very well cared-for one eventually...But it took more time and triage than I expected. Good luck!

After our first Volvo (06 v70 awd) we picked up a 04 xc90 2.5t awd with 97000kms. Other than a few known issues Like a wheel bearing, tcv, end links ( and doing it in a backyard saved a ton of cash and wasn't really hard.). quite happy with it and considering the cost savings over newer (07) which was out of the price range, we figure the people mover should be with us for many years to come. We did have a really extensive service record which helped, and this forum which has been even more helpful!

Nice! Sounds like an '08 or '09 will be the ticket. So... The other question, is CPO worth it? Does Volvo have a good warranty for CPO? Or should we also be checking out private sales/CarMax/Etc (we got my wife's current car, a VW Eos hardtop convert. at CarMax with 4000 miles on it for 10k off the new price, and I was very happy with the experience)

@abqsam - The CPO thing is your call. I found the the price differential is $3-4k added to CPO cars. I wasn't averse to it, but as I mentioned before, I (surprisingly) couldn't find a well looked-after XC90 at Volvo dealers. I ended up buying mine at a Mercedes dealer that had one year left on the factory warranty (car had 35k miles) and they offered a $3k warranty to 75k miles. I talked to my trusty independent mechanic and he said it was basically an expensive insurance policy, and that the big repairs are likely to hit after 75k miles. So after the factory warranty runs out in May '12, I will put the $3k aside - where it can earn .00005% interest - and pay for repairs out of pocket, should they be needed. As in life, it's all a bit of a gamble...Just depends on your tolerance for risk.

Nice. Congrats! You probably got a good deal too as the face-lifted 2013's are already out. Yeah it's weird that Volvo won't be making any 2012 models in 2012, right?

Anyhow I just bought my wife a CPO 2008 in the same light green color as the 1977 VW Dasher station wagon she had when I met her! Needless to say, she loves it.

Think I found the perfect truck !

2007 XC90 V8 Sport (diamond black with R interior) with only 62,000Km (38k miles). Had it out in the snow the other day.

Now how do I keep it clean here in the winter ?

Can't wait to get it detailed again !
