I am a recent new owner of an '05 XC70 with 80,000 miles on the odo.

Does anyone know of any hiccups that I might encounter replacing my front rotors and pads?

This will be the first time I will be jacking up the car. Is there any special place in which to place the jack (rolling floor jack) and jack stands?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I have a leaking radiator to replace in the very near future as well.[cussing]

Thanks all.

Take a digital picture of the anti-rattle springs.

Make sure they go back on correctly, or you'll have a very soft pedal.

The job is straightforward...no surprises...and I would flush the fluid while you're at it...DOT-4 required.

Agreed on the anti rattle springs. I messed it up once and had the very soft pedal. As for the jacking points:

Thanks Gents. My Brembo rotors and Akebono ceramic pads were waiting for me when I got home today. I ordered them from FCP Groton. Not a bad deal with 15% off the entire order and free shipping.

Hopefully the pads will be better with the brake dust. That isht is crazy.

I've done my '98 S70 before so I know about the anti-rattlers. I just didn't want to run into any surprises on a 6 year newer car.

Out of curiosity, what color are the Brembo rotors?

Some of the pics on FCP's website shows them a slight goldish color.

You'll love those Akebonos...great choice...I've got over 50K on a set on the XC and on the T5...virtually no dust...good stopping power...

Agreed. Very good pads and the price isn't that bad either.

Cheers,

I know what you are saying about the coloring on their site. They turned out to be silver.

I just did my o6 v70 fronts but went with Volvo OEM. I was worried about performance on the frigid prairie winters. Any feedback regarding winter degraded performance in the frigid cold?

I used the same combination of pads and rotors (i.e. Brembo and Akebono) on my 850R (upgraded to 12in discs) when I lived in North Bay and they worked fine in -30 to -40C. Now myself, on the other hand, did not.

Cheers,

Bill

I should have asked here on the forum before pulling the plug on the OEM pads! I hate brake dust! Good to know Akebonos work well in the cold, but Volvo enthusiasts don't.

OK, I have not looked at the XC70's brakes yet. What is different about these compared to the older 70 series? And does anyone have any pictures of these retaining springs and how they go in? Reason behind question is I have a soft pedal like Astro mentioned above when I bought the car and want to make sure mine are in properly before I replace master cylinder.

Not much. Essentially the same.
