View Full Version : AWD working intermittently: How do these codes relate

My 2004 XC70 has had the AWD working intermittently in the snow. Often it works as it should, but occasionally it doesn't work at all. I first noticed this last winter while starting from a complete stop in the snow on level ground (very wet, slippery snow). The traction control dash light came on, and the front tires spun, but there was no power to the rear. This was the first time I had seen a problem after many years in the snow. Since then it works some times. In some instances, it works goes from not working to working, but I can't seem to force it (restarting the car, pressing the W button, manually shifting, etc).

Since winter is coming up again soon, I realized I hadn't taken care of it. I brought it to the local specialist. He said that when it was on the lift, power was getting to the back wheels. But he also said he was unable to talk to the DEM. The codes were DEM-E000 and CEM-1A64. So things aren't communicating correctly. His suggestion is to get the software update (in the $300 range) first. If that doesn't work, he believe the next step is a new DEM (way more expensive).

Anyone see this problem? I've read about several different issues, include the pressure gauge in the DEM, but the codes are not necessary consistent with that. Any ideas?

Hi, both codes say communication problem...related to DEM. Is the fuse 23 rear left 7,5A ok? Cleaning the pressure/temperature sensor & connectors might help as well. see also [url]http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=90369

I checked the fuse and it was fine. Then I pulled the DEM, expecting it to be dirty and require something (such as the temp/pressure sensor or connectors) to be cleaned. But it was spotless inside. The connectors, seal, etc were all clean as could be. I didn't even pull the temp sensor. Was that a mistake? I just figured, given how clean it was, it wasn't the issue.

Other ideas? Should I actually pull the sensor? Or should I pay for the software update and/or new DEM as recommended by my local mechanic?

I had the exact same intermittent symptoms with the awd, and my local volvo shop could not communicate with mine as well. I checked the sensor and plug as you did. In the end, I took it to the dealer to have it scanned. Ended up it was the aoc pump in the haldex. With parts and labor it came to $780.00. I am learning that instead of reading threads about all the possibilities, I just have to suck it up, and have it scanned at the dealer. They also did the computer upgrade at the same time.

I agree.
You need to stop dicking around with independents now and go to Volvo

Gotcha. Not sure I trust the dealer where I am at (San Diego) since they don't touch the AWD much. This is only based on a few conversations with them I've had in the past. But, since I don't really have many alternatives, I might just suck it up.

I have never heard of a dealership that would tell their customers they are unfamiliar with their own make of vehicles. I find that very hard to believe, especially with all the known issues with the awd systems. Maybe your dealership opened up after 2002.:D
