I am in the middle of a rehab of the front suspension. I have both sides disassembled and there are some parts that are in bad shape. I was expecting the springs to be rusty and in need of replacement, but that does not seem to be the case. They look fine. Much better than expected with only a spot of surface rust here and there. I would not even consider replacing the springs if it were not for the reports by some of failure.

My question is should I replace them anyway?

I will reuse these parts:
Top Washer
Top Nut
Bellows

Everything else will be replaced.

What do you think about the springs? reuse or replace?

The car is an 02 with 128K miles driven in and around the buckle of the rust belt -Milwaukee, WI.

Thanks,

Keith

I just had the passenger side break- so they do go. So both sides replaced.

I am using this set up and am 200% satisfied.
Better than original.

Sachs front shocks: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Volvo-S60-S80-V70-99-00-01-02-03-04-05-06-Struts-Shocks-/350502567300?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item519b94bd84#ht_4850wt_1010

S60 AWD springs.

It will lower the ride by about 1.52" all round and is still smooth as silk :)

Sachs is the OEM supplier, however as Ocean Racer mentioned, those particular ones are not stock for the XC70.

True, yeah I realize that you are basically lowering it to the level of a stock s60 awd or v70 awd... So i assume oceanracer your going to for v70 awd rear springs?

Thanks Ocean Racer.
This is getting a bit away from my original question of whether I should reuse or replace to what to replace them with... but I suppose it's a good discussion now before I place an order.
Why did you go with these springs/struts? What was your thought process? Why is it better than original? You mentioned that you are happy, but what are the consequences of doing this? Any drawbacks? I'm not sure I want to lower my ride height, but it's a possibility. Why leave your rear at stock height?
Please explain.
Are the pics in your "Swapping XC brakes for R Brembos" post a view of the car with these springs and struts on your car? If not, then please provide pics of your ride height with these lowered springs/struts.

It's hard to say whether to replace them or not (unless they are in horrible condition, then yes obviously). Having said that, you will have everything apart to replace the struts, so the only difference would be the cost of the springs.

If you do replace with stock, you can get the Volvo $$$$ or go with Lesjöfors $$; very good quality, made in Sweden (likely the OE manufacture). XC70 Front - 40 958 37 and XC70 Rear - 42 958 42

I used them when I replaced the broken front spring on mine (replace both sides).

I went with the sachs struts because I blew my XC shocks just after installing the EVOLVE V70R sport springs. The link I posted was not the exact ones I purchased but a similar matching set. Plus theres no better feel than new struts etc [thumbup]
