04s and 05s are also fine
Except for the "instant traction" Haldex programming on the 06-07s,
04s thru 07s are essentially all the same mechanically and 05-07 are 100% the same except for the aforesaid instant traction
Naturally the newer you buy hopefully you should be able to find a lower mileage XC.
Bear in mind that low mileage 05-07s are quite expensive.
I would be most happy to find you a great one, and if that works for you, PM me

2008 completely redesigned - I never buy the first year of any car design - and it seems to take the Swedes many years to work the bugs out!

I drive a 2004 Volvo xc70 with over 110,000 miles on it. The New Jersey weather is not greaat, snow, salt heavy rains and we live by beach. I have had 0 problems with this car and I drive it I dont baby it. Love this car. I have a 19 yr old daughter who drives a new S40 a 17 yr old son with a 2007 GMC Envoy and my wife drives a 2011 S80. Tried to trade my XC in on a newer XC 90 but can only get 7500 for it. I called a few dealers north of here like RI and MA and they offered me over 8700 for it. Anyone know why worth more outside of NJ. Or one more reason to move out of here.[thumbup] Sorry side bar if yo can find a medium mileage XC70 say 65k-80k I say buy it. My Volvo dealer checked the Vin, and I do timeing belt at 120,000 it is the only way to check certain engine is 105k other number is 120k. Dont listen to anyone else, of course early cant hurt it.

2006 or 2007 series the last 100% Volvo.

"On 28 January 1999 Volvo Group sold its business area Volvo Car Corporation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_Cars) to the Ford Motor Company (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Motor_Company) for US$6.45 billion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1,000,000,000_%28number%29), with the resulting group largely set on commercial vehicles. Volvo Cars was then sold to China's Zhejiang Geely Holding Group (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zhejiang_Geely_Holding_Group) in 2010."

So wouldn't 1998 be the last 100% Volvo?

MacNoob, even if it's sold to Ford in 1999, it take some time to integrate Ford design in the Volvos. I would be certain to bet the 2000 is the last of the original Volvo series. The P1/P2/P3 would be a joint Ford/Volvo design.

Yep.

Yes is a Volvo platform used to ford cars too. Only the V70 and XC70 after the 2008 have a Ford platform ( Ford Mondeo in Europe ).Unfortunately after the 2001/2002 V70 and xc70 leave some Volvo pieces and use some Ford pieces more cheaper. The Xc90 actually have the old platform Volvo 100% the same of S80 , S60 V70and XC70 2001-2008.

I have the same year as you do, 04 xc70 with about 105k miles (168k km), did my timing belt/water pump recently just in case. As far as xc90 goes just got an '07 for my wife (112k km) 70k miles on it. The car is great but seats are no where as comfortable as in the old xc70. I think any XC70 except for '01, '02 and '08 are gonna be a great buy. Should you decide to trade up for an xc90 stay away from the T6, and if you can look for a V8, i wish i did. The 3.2 n/a feels a bit slow compared to the xc70 2.5t
