This will sound a little odd but I have a 2001 XC70 that I purchased used with the Euro-style hitch assembly that attaches up under the bumper. It drops down exactly like the picture of the US-style hitch assembly shown in the attached picture. I'm wondering if these two different assemblies are attached to the towbar via the same 4 bolts in the same way, ie. is the spacing the same. If so there should be no reason to completely uninstall my current hitch to reinstall the US-style hitch (I need the square acceptor for a couple accessories).
Anyone have the US-style that looks like the one in the picture that you could look at and measure the bolt positions, they connect right where the bumper was cut to allow the dropdown from the towbar.
