I have a 1998 XC that I need some opinions on. I bought this XC for $900 and am currently into it for about $1300. I bought the car did a tune up, replaced the mass air flow sensor and the coolant temp sensor. To fix all the known issues and quirks will cost me about another $1200-$1700 with doing the work myself. I need to do the following work:timing belt with water pump, flame trap ,used a/c comp, air pump bypass, ABS module repair, rear drive shaft, coolant tank, radiator hoses and two door hinges. At that point I am into the car for $2500-$3000. The car has very straight body and is really clean and runs good with 160k on it.. The only negative is it does have a salvage title. I am not really sure why. There are no issues with the car that I can find on the body. Being that the car has a salvage title I am not sure if I should fix it up our just buy another XC. The cheapest you usually ever find a XC in my area is about $3500-$4000. Any opinions and advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

With that much repair to do and the mileage, it's wiser to let it go and buy another one. 3500$-4000$ is a very fair price for a excellent condition V70 XC. I'd rather buy one for 3000-3500$ and spend 1000$ to bring it to top condition than invest 3000$ on too much repairs (which could potentially get unfinished as you find more and moew new issues).

Newsflash, you will spend that much on most of them anyway these days!
If you plan to keep it another 2-4 years it really doesn't matter which way you go
It depends on how decent this one is and if you like it

I am leaning towards keeping the car. At least I will know what has been done.
